Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 539986  Size: SH
  1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  2. Remove the water inlet housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  3. Adjust the water crossover pipe for access. Refer to Engine Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the engine mount strut bracket Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  5. Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side .
  6. Remove the camshaft covers. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side and Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side .
  7. Install the J 42038 on the camshafts.
  8. Remove the primary camshaft drive chain. Refer to Primary Camshaft Drive Chain Replacement .
  9. Remove the left cylinder head camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Left Side .
  10. Important: Place the valve train parts in a rack in order to make sure that they are installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  11. Remove the valve rocker arms.
  12. Important: Place the valve train parts in a rack in order to ensure that they are installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  13. Remove the lifters.

  15. Remove the M6 external drive bolts (1 & 3) from the front portion of the cylinder head. Note the location of the longer M6 bolt (1).
  16. Remove and discard the M11 internal drive cylinder head bolts (2).
  17. Remove the cylinder head. Ensure that no dowel guide pins are stuck in the cylinder head.

  19. Remove the cylinder head gasket. Make sure all of the gasket material is removed.
  20. Place the cylinder head on a flat, clean surface with the combustion chambers face-up in order to prevent damage to the deck face.
  21. To disassemble the cylinder head refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L Unit Repair.
  22. To clean and inspect the cylinder head refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L Unit Repair.
  23. To inspect the valve springs refer to Valve Spring Inspection and Measurement in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L Unit Repair.
  24. To grind the seats and valves refer to Valve and Seat Grinding in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L Unit Repair.
  25. To assemble the cylinder head refer to Cylinder Head Assemble in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 233785  Size: SH
  1. Ensure all the cylinder head locating pins are securely mounted in the cylinder block deck face.
  2. Install a new cylinder head gasket using the deck face locating pins for retention.

  3. Object Number: 233787  Size: SH
  4. Align the cylinder head with the deck face locating pins.
  5. Place the cylinder head in position on the deck face.
  6. Important: DO NOT reuse the old M11 cylinder head bolts.

  7. Install the new M11 cylinder head bolts (2).
  8. Install the M6 bolts at the front of the cylinder head. Install the longer M6 bolt (1) in the outboard location as shown. Install the two shorter M6 bolts (3) in the locations shown.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Tighten the M11 bolts.
  11. Tighten

    1. Tighten the M11 bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
    2. Use the J 36660-A to rotate the bolts an additional 100 degrees.
    3. Use the J 36660-A to rotate the bolts a final 100 degrees.

  12. Tighten the long M6 bolt (1).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the long bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  14. Tighten the 2 shorter M6 bolts (2).
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the 2 shorter bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  16. Install the lifters.
  17. Install the rocker arms.
  18. Install the left cylinder head camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Left Side .
  19. Install the primary camshaft drive chain. Refer to Primary Camshaft Drive Chain Replacement .
  20. Remove the J 42038 from the camshafts.
  21. Install the camshaft covers. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side and Camshaft Cover Replacement - Right Side .
  22. Install the water crossover pipe. Refer to Engine Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  23. Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side .
  24. Install the engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  25. Install the water inlet housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  26. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
