Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the starter solenoid click with the ignition switch in the START position?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

  1. Engage the parking brake.
  2. Place the manual selector lever in P or N (automatic transmission).
  3. Place the gear selector lever in neutral and depress the clutch (manual transmission ).
  4. Test for battery voltage at the starter solenoid terminal S with the ignition switch in the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Replace the starter solenoid. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement and Starter Motor Overhaul .

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 16

    • Test for battery voltage at terminal 3 of the transmission range switch (automatic transmission ) with the ignition switch in the START position.
    • Test for battery voltage at terminal 2 of the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch with the clutch pedal depressed (manual transmission ) and the ignition switch in the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 7

Repair the open in the BLK/YEL wire between the transmission range (or CPP) switch and the starter solenoid. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 16

    • Test for battery voltage at terminal 2 of the transmission range switch with the ignition switch in the START position.
    • Test for battery voltage at terminal 1 of the CPP switch with the clutch pedal depressed and the ignition switch in the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 8

    • Replace the transmission range switch. Refer to Transmission Range Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
    • Replace the CPP switch. Refer to Clutch Pedal Position Switch Replacement in Clutch.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 16

Test for battery voltage at terminal 5 of C203 (located in the junction block) with the ignition switch in the START position.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 10

Repair the open in the BLK/RED wire between C203 and the transmission range (or CPP) switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 16

Test for battery voltage at terminal 7 of C203 (located in the junction block).

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 12

Replace the ignition switch. Refer to Steering Column Lock and Ignition Switch Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column-Standard or Steering Column Lock and Ignition Switch Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.

Test for battery voltage at the fuse block connector 4 terminal 1.

Is battery voltage present?

Go to Step 14

Repair the open in the WHT/GRN wire between the fuse block connector 4 terminal 1 and the ignition switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 16

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
