RKE INOPERATIVE AT TEMPERATURES ABOVE 36

SUBJECT: RKE Inoperative at Temperatures Above 36 C (95 F) (Replace RKE Module)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1996 Saturns equipped with factory installed remote keyless entry (RKE) (AUO).

IMPORTANT: This bulletin does not affect retailer installed remote keyless entry (RKE) system.

CONDITION: Some 1996 Saturns equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE) may exhibit a significant reduction in transmitter/receiver operating range during high vehicle interior temperatures of 36 C (95 F) or above. This loss of range may be perceived as an inoperative condition. The transmitter/receiver may function normally once the vehicle interior temperature cools to below 36 C (95 F).

CAUSE: The loss of range may be due to an increase in internal resistance within the RKE module.

CORRECTION: If condition is verified as heat related, inspect the RKE module for date code, located within the BAR code on the RKE module. If the date code is 6091 or less, replace the suspected RKE module with a module manufactured with a date code 6092 or greater. (Refer to the "1996 Revised Electrical Service Manual" for removal and installation procedures.)

IMPORTANT: The BAR code label is located on the top of the RKE module, just above the connector. The BAR code label is stamped with a 15-digit alpha-numeric code. The last four digits of the BAR code, as indicated by the bolded figures in the following example, are the manufacturing date code written in the Julian date format. (6 = Year Manufactured, 092 = Day of Year Manufactured.)

Example: 62003N308336092

PARTS REQUIREMENTS: 21023127 Module Asm- R/Con Dr Lk Rcvr

CLAIM INFORMATION: To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System using the appropriate Electronic Labor Time Guide and Labor Operation Code R4480.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
