This bulletin provides clarification information on the new rust preventative coating being applied to brake rotors.
As explained in Technical Information Bulletin 95 - T- 16, a rust preventative coating is now applied to front and rear brake rotors. This rust preventative coating is applied to help prevent rust and corrosion during vehicle shipment and while vehicles await delivery. After the first 500 to 800 miles (805 to 1287 km) the rust preventative coating will wear off the braking surfaces of the brake rotors. There is no change in the rotor metallic composition.
ROTORS SHOULD ONLY BE REPLACED FOR THE REASONS OUTLINED IN TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN 95 - T - 15.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
