Fan Replacement 7.4L

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the drive belt from the engine. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  3. Object Number: 71667  Size: SH
  4. Remove the radiator fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  5. Remove the fan and fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  6. Remove the fan blade to fan clutch bolts.
  7. Remove the fan blade from the fan clutch.

Installation Procedure

Caution: Do not repair or reuse a fan with a bent or damaged blade. Replace the fan as an assembly. A damaged blade can change the balance of a fan. A fan out of balance could fly apart during use and create a dangerous condition to the owner and the vehicle.

  1. Install the fan blade to the fan clutch.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the fan blade to fan clutch bolts and the washers.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 21 N·m (16 lb ft).

  5. Install the fan and fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  6. Install the upper radiator fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  7. Install the drive belt to the engine. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Fan Replacement 4.3L/5.7L

Removal Procedure

  2. Remove the upper radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  3. Remove the fan and the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  4. Remove the belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  6. Remove the fan clutch bolts.
  7. Remove the fan from the fan clutch.

    Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  5. Install the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  6. Install the belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  7. Install the radiator fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .

  8. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  4. Install the fan and the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  5. Install the radiator fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
