Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  4. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  6. Remove the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  7. Remove the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  9. Remove the valve lifters and the valve push rods. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  11. Remove the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  12. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.

  13. Object Number: 5147  Size: SH
  14. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 5147  Size: SH

    Important: Whenever a camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:

       • Change the engine oil.
       • Change the engine oil filter.
       • Add Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent to the engine oil.

  1. Install the camshaft into the engine block. Refer to Camshaft Installation .

  2. Object Number: 9847  Size: SH
  3. Install the balance shaft drive gear. Refer to Balance Shaft Replacement for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.

  4. Object Number: 11503  Size: SH
  5. Install the components to the front of the engine. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  6. Notice: Failure to properly align the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring may result in component damage and effect OBD II system performance.

  7. Install the valve lifters and the valve push rods. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 4068  Size: SH
  9. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  10. Install the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  11. Object Number: 4041  Size: SH
  12. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  13. Install the condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
  14. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Coolant.
  16. Change the engine oil and oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  17. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
