Removal Procedure
- Ensure the park brake
lever is in the released position.
- Remove the 4 screws (1,3,4,6), the 2 clips (2,5),
and lift up the console.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect
the power neutral switch connector.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary power outlet, disconnect
the auxiliary power outlet connector.
- Disconnect the park brake
switch connector (10).
- Remove the park brake
cable lock nut (1).
- Remove the park brake cables from the equalizer.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the 2 rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the 2 brake drums. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Turn the shoe hold down
pins (1) in order to release the shoe hold down springs (2).
- Remove the shoe hold down springs.
- Remove the following components:
• | The upper return spring (1) |
• | The adjuster spring (5) |
- Remove the lower return spring (4)
- Disconnect the park brake
cable (3) from the park brake shoe lever.
Important: The color ring on the park brake cable is for identification.
- Squeeze the park brake cable stopper ring (2) in order to remove
the cable (3) from the backing plate (1).
- Remove the 3 park brake retainer bolts and the 3 park
brake retainers.
- Remove the park brake cable and the grommet from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the park brake cable and the grommet to the vehicle.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Secure
the park brake cable with the 3 park brake retainers and the 3 park
brake retainer bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the park brake retainer bolts to 10 N·m (88.5 lb in).
Important: The color ring on the park brake cable is for identification. Ensure
the new park brake cable has the same color on the ring as the old park brake
cable.
- Install the brake cable
stopper ring (2) and the park brake cable (3) to the backing
plate (1).
- Install the park brake cable spring (1) and the nipple end (2)
to the park brake shoe lever (3).
- Install the lower return
spring (4).
- Install the following components:
• | The upper return spring (1) |
• | The adjuster spring (5) |
- Install the shoe hold
down springs (2). Turn the shoe hold down pins (1) in order
to secure the shoe hold down springs.
- Install the 2 brake drums. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
.
- Install the 2 rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
Important: The equalizer must be within 15 degrees of perpendicular to the
park brake lever cable.
- Install the equalizer (5)
to the park brake cable (4). Secure with the pin (6).
- Install the park brake
cable lock nut (1).
- Connect the park brake
switch connector (10).
- Adjust the park brake lever. Refer to
Parking Brake Lever Adjustment
.
- Position the console over the shift knob.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary power outlet, connect
the auxiliary power outlet connector.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, connect
the power neutral switch connector.
- Install the console. Secure
with 4 screws (1,3,4,6) and 2 clips (2,5).
