Removal Procedure

  1. Ensure the park brake lever is released.
  2. Remove the 4 screws (1,3,4,6), the 2 clips (2,5), and lift up the console.

  4. Loosen the parking brake cable lock nut (2).
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  6. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  7. Remove the locking washers from the wheel studs.

  9. Remove the drum (1) from the axle hub. If the drum cannot be removed by hand, install two 8 mm bolts (2) into the drum. Tightening the bolts will force the drum off the hub.

Installation Procedure

  1. Before installing the drum, measure the outer diameter of the brake shoes (3). The outer diameter of the brake shoes should be between 219.4 mm (8.638 in) and 219.7 mm (8.650 in). If the outer diameter of the brake shoes is not within specification, turn the adjuster (2) in order to adjust the outer diameter of the shoes.
  2. Install the brake drum. Verify that the drum is free of dirt and oil.
  3. Install the locking washers to the wheel studs.
  4. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Press the brake pedal three to ten times with about 30 kg (66 lb) in order to obtain the proper drum-to-shoe clearance.
  7. Adjust the parking brake. Refer to Parking Brake Lever Adjustment in Park Brake.

  9. Install the console. Secure with 4 screws (1,3,4,6) and 2 clips (2,5).
