- Apply General Motors Sealer, GM P/N 1052366 (Canadian P/N 88900041),
or equivalent, to the mating surface of the rear axle shaft bearing retainer.
Important: The rear axle shafts are different lengths.
- Install the rear axle shaft and the bearing into the rear axle housing.
Ensure the rear axle shaft bearing is firmly seated in the rear axle housing.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the 4 nuts (4, 6) in order to retain the
rear axle shaft to the rear axle housing.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).
- Install the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
.
- If the vehicle has ABS, install the wheel speed sensor (5).
- Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to

Tighten
Tighten drain plug to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Refill the rear axle housing with approximately 2.2 liters
(4.6 pints) of 80W-90 GL5 lubricant, GM P/N 12345977
(Canadian P/N 10953482), or equivalent. The oil level should
