Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 6125-1B Slide Hammer
    • J 23129 Axle Seal Remover
  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End.
  4. Remove the tie rod from the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Front Suspension.
  5. Remove the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Remove the drive axle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.

  7. Object Number: 15902  Size: SH

    Important: Do not damage the seal bore.

  8. Remove the seals (117). Use J 23129 and J 6125-1B .

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28537  Seal Installer
    • J 8092  Drive hammer

    Object Number: 15906  Size: SH
  1. Install the new oil seals. Use J 34115 .
  2. Lubricate the seal lip with a light wipe of transmission oil.
  3. Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface because damage may occur.

  4. Install the drive axle into the transmission case. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  5. Install the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Install the tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Front Suspension.
  7. Seat the drive axle into the transmission case. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  8. Install the front fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End.
  9. Install the tire and the wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Inspect the oil seal for leaks.
  12. Adjust the transmission oil level.
