Subject:Chime Sounds But Low Oil Pressure Indicator Does Not Illuminate

Models:2008 Saturn VUE Equipped with LZ4 (3.5L), LY7 (3.6L) or LE5 2.4L Engine

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

A vehicle may exhibit an intermittent chime with no warning indicator illuminated. A rapid chime (200 pulses per minute) may be heard when the vehicle is in a forward gear and wheel speed is present.

Recommendation/Instructions:

This could be caused by a faulty Low Oil Pressure switch or true low oil pressure. When the switch determines the engine oil pressure is below the desired specification the vehicle should illuminate the "Low Oil Pressure" indicator and sound the chime. However due to a software anomaly the IPC indicator does not illuminate. When attempting to diagnose this concern first verify proper engine oil pressure. If the actual engine oil pressure is within specifications then proper operation of the oil pressure switch should be verified. The Tech2 can be used to view the ECM data list for "Oil Pressure" status. The correct status should be "OK". If the status is NOT "OK" diagnose and resolve the fault in the switch or the reason for low oil pressure.

The IPC software calibration update for this concern is now available through Tis2Web.

For LE5 equipped vehicles campaign #08261 resolves this condition.

For LZ4 and LY7 vehicles - reprogram the cluster with the latest cluster software.

Important: Select the correct operating system or calibration file using the vehicles RPO Codes and presence or absence of Compass. Different calibrations are available for: LE5 w/ and w/o Compass, LZ4/LY7 FWD w/ and w/o Compass and LZ4/LY7 AWD w/ and w/o Compass.

Note: The chime and the IPC low oil pressure lamp will only operate when the vehicle is in a forward gear and wheel speed is present.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
