    • J 43653 Flywheel Holding Tool
    • J 35944-A Transmission Oil Cooler Flusher

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
  2. Disconnect the air duct hose to the intake plenum. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement for the 2.2L (L61) engine or Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement for the 2.4L (LAT) engine.

  4. Disconnect the shift control cable (3) from the range select lever (4).
  5. Release the shift control cable retaining clip (2) and remove the cable from the shift control cable bracket (1).
  6. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the main transaxle electrical connector, and the park neutral position (PNP) switch.
  7. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  8. Tie the radiator, air conditioning condenser, and fan module assembly to the upper radiator support to keep the assembly with the vehicle when the frame is lowered.
  9. If equipped with 2.4L (LAT), remove the auxiliary fluid pump. Refer to Auxiliary Fluid Pump Replacement .

  11. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2).
  12. Remove the left transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side .
  13. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  14. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  15. Remove the splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .

  17. Remove the bolts (2, 3) from the transmission brace.
  18. Remove the transmission brace (1).
  19. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  20. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
  21. Use the J 43653 to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  23. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  24. Remove the nut holding the transmission cooler line retainer to the transmission.
  25. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines from the transmission.

  27. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wiring harness from the sensor.
  28. Remove the steering gear intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  29. Disconnect the tie rods from the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  30. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
  31. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .
  32. Remove the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement .
  33. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  34. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.

  36. Remove the lower transmission to engine bolts (5, 6, 7, 8).
  37. Separate the engine and the transaxle.
  38. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  39. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with J 35944-A . Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

  41. Remove the following only if replacing the transmission.
  42. • Remove the shift cable bracket bolt (3), nut (1), and bracket (2).
    • Remove the park/neutral position (PNP) switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement .
    • Remove the transmission mounts. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement and Transmission Rear Mount Replacement .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the following if previously removed.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    • Install the shift cable bracket  (2), bolt (3), and nut (1).

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt (3) and nut (1) to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

    • Install the PNP switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement .
    • Install the transmission mounts. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement and Transmission Rear Mount Replacement .
  3. Position the transaxle in the vehicle.

  5. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts (5, 6, 7, 8).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  7. Install the wheel drive shafts to the transaxle. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  8. Lubricate the transaxle cooler pipes before inserting into seals.
  9. Connect the transaxle cooler pipes to the transaxle.
  10. Install the transaxle cooler pipes retainer nut.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 7 N·m (62 lb in).

  12. Use the J 43653 to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  14. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the torque converter bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  16. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
  17. Install the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement .
  18. Install the steering gear intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  19. Connect the ball joints to the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .
  20. Connect the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
  21. Connect the tie rods to the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .

  23. Connect the wiring harness to the VSS.

  25. Install the transmission brace (1).
  26. Install the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 53 N·m (39 lb ft).

  28. Install the front splash shields. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .
  29. Install the front wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  30. Lower the vehicle.
  31. Install the left transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side .

  33. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2).
  34. Tighten
    Tighten all of the bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2) to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  35. Untie the radiator, air conditioning condenser, and fan module assembly.
  36. If equipped with 2.4L (LAT), install the auxiliary fluid pump. Refer to Auxiliary Fluid Pump Replacement .
  37. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  38. Connect the transaxle wiring harness to the main transaxle electrical connector, and the PNP switch.

  40. Install the shift control cable to the shift control cable bracket (1). Ensure the cable retaining clip (2) is fully seated.
  41. Connect the shift control cable (3) to the range select lever (4).
  42. Connect the air duct hose to the intake plenum. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Resonator Replacement for the 2.2L (L61) engine or Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement for the 2.4L (LAT) engine.
  43. Install the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
  44. Inspect the transmission fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  45. Notice: Transmission Auxiliary Pump Priming must be performed after any service procedure is performed on the transmission that involves the draining of and refill of transmission fluid. Failure to perform the Transmission Auxiliary Pump Priming will result in damage to the auxiliary pump and possible damage to the transmission.

  46. Using a scan tool, prime the transmission auxiliary pump.
  47. Important: It is recommended that transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the engine control module (ECM), powertrain control module (PCM) or transmission control module (TCM) will need to relearn TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

  48. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Transmission Adaptive Functions .
