Interior Dome Lamp Will Not Turn Off When Right Front Door Is Closed or Horn Sounds Intermittently in Alarm Mode (Diagnose and Install Foam Support)

This bulletin is being updated with revised Cause information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-42-002 (Section 08 - Body & Accessories).

Some customers may comment on the interior dome lamp not turning off when the doors are closed. They may also comment that the alarm will sound with no known external input.

The door jamb switch is designed to electrically "close" when the door is opened. The right front door jamb switch may fail to open all the way when the door is closed. There may be times when the switch will fully open (no electrical contact) causing the dome lamp to turn off. At other times, the outer trim cover on the right side may "relax" enough (flex inward) such that the switch may close (make internal electrical contact). If the remote keyless entry (RKE) alarm has been set and electrical contact is made (switch closed), the alarm may sound because the body control module (BCM) detects that the door is open.

Verify the condition and install foam support behind the outer trim cover.

1. If comment is "dome lamp will not go off," proceed to step 7.
2. If comment is "alarm intermittently sounds with no known external input," proceed to step 3.
3. Verify that the dome lamp switch is placed into "door" position.
4. Close all doors to verify that the dome lamp goes off. If the dome lamp did not go off, proceed to step 7.



5. Use medium pressure and push outward on the right front inner door panel (where the top of the glove box meets the panel) to see if the dome lamp comes on.
6. If the dome lamp comes on while pressing on the panel, proceed to step 10. If not, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to "Circuit Testing" in Wiring Systems subsection of the Body section of the 2004 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 2 or 2005 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 4 (SI Document ID #1506310) to diagnose wiring concern.
7. Verify that the dome lamp switch is placed into "door" position.
8. Close all doors except the right front door.
9. Push in the right front door jamb switch. If the dome lamp goes off, proceed to step 10. If the dome lamp does not go off, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to "Circuit Testing" in Wiring Systems subsection of the Body section of the 2004 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 2 or 2005 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 4 (SI Document ID #1506310) to diagnose wiring concern.
10. Remove the right IP outer trim cover. Refer to "Instrument Panel (IP) Outer Trim Cover Replacement - Right" procedures (SI Document ID #1219278) in SI.




Important: Foam should not contact the door jamb switch.

11. Place the foam support pad on the plastic crosspiece as shown in the illustration.
12. Reinstall the right IP outer trim cover. Refer to "Instrument Panel (IP) Outer Trim Cover Replacement - Right" procedures (SI Document ID #1219278) in SI.
13. Verify that the dome lamp turns off when right front door is closed and turns on when the right front door is opened.
