Subject:Service Manual Update - Revised Oil Viscosity Information

Models:2004 Saturn VUE Vehicles
with 3.5L V-6 Engine (VIN 4 -- RPO L66)

Attention: Fixed Operations Manager and Technician

Purpose

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform Saturn retailers of new information regarding engine oil viscosity for the 3.5L V-6 (L66) engine. The existing information found in the "Explanation of Scheduled Services" in the General Information section of the 2004 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 1 is still correct but only applies to the 2.2L four-cylinder (L61) engine. Additional information specific to the new 3.5L V-6 (L66) engine is provided in this bulletin.

Please obtain all copies of the 2004 VUE Service Manual, Vol. 1 at your facility. On page 0-37 in the General Information section, locate the "Explanation of Scheduled Services" information. Cross out the existing "Engine Oil" header and write in "Engine Oil Requirements with the 2.2L L4 (L61) Engine Only."

Make copies of the following "Engine Oil Requirements with the 3.5L V-6 (L66) Engine Only" information and insert to page 0-37, adjacent to the existing information.

The eSI website will be updated immediately and future Service Stall System SI CD releases will include this and other service manual updates.

Engine Oil Requirements with the 3.5L V-6 (L66) Engine Only

The vehicle's engine requires oil meeting GM Standard GM6094M. Use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM6094M. GM Goodwrench® oil meets all the requirements.

The viscosity chart shows that SAE 5W-20 is best for the vehicle.

These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W-50.

Object Number: 65538 Size: SH

Oils meeting these requirements should also have the starburst symbol on the container. This symbol indicates that the oil has been certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

You should look for this information on the oil container, and use those oils that are identified as meeting GM Standard GM6094M and have the starburst symbol on the front of the oil container.

When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL light comes on, service is required for the vehicle. On vehicles driven under the best conditions, the engine oil life system may not indicate that vehicle service is necessary for over a year. However, the engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year, and at this time the system must be reset.

If the engine oil life system is ever reset accidentally, the customer must have the vehicle serviced within 5,000 km (3,000 mi) since your last service. Reset the oil life system whenever you change the oil. Refer to "GM Oil Life System - Resetting" (SI Document ID #1088103) in the General Information section of the 2004 Saturn VUE Service Manual, Vol. 1 for information on the engine Oil Life System and resetting the system.
