GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Your AM/FM Cassette Stereo with Graphic Equalizer is equipped with a programmable theft deterrent system intended to discourage theft by causing the player to be inoperable if it is removed from your vehicle, if the battery has been disconnected, a 10A chime fuse is removed or open, or power is interrupted to the radio.

When you first purchase your vehicle, the theft deterrent feature is inactive. You must program a 4-digit code to activate the system.

To program your personal code or to re-activate the system, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the ignition key to "RUN".
  2. Turn the radio power off.
  3. Push and hold preset buttons 5 and 6 for 5 seconds. The display will show "----".
  4. Select a four-digit code to be entered in the following steps.
  5. We suggest a number that is familiar to you such as the beginning of your phone number, your birth date, or your address so that you won't easily forget it.

  6. Push SEEK DOWN to obtain "0000" on the display.
  7. Push SEEK DOWN again to set the first digit of your personal code.
  8. Push SEEK UP to set the second digit.
  9. Push TUNE DOWN to set the third digit.
  10. Push TUNE UP to set the fourth digit.
  11. When the four digit code appears correctly in the display, push AM/FM to store the code.
  12. The display will ask for verification by displaying "REP" (Repeat).
  13. Repeat steps 5 to 10.
  14. If you entered everything correctly, the display will indicate that the radio is secure "SEC".

To deactivate the system so your retailer can perform service on your vehicle, enter your personal 4-digit code using steps 1 through 10 above. When your vehicle is returned to you, remember to reactivate the system using steps 1 through 13 above.

When the system is active, or secure "SEC", and power is removed from the radio, the system will enter the locked "LOC" state. To unlock the system, follow steps 5 through 13 above with your ignition key in the "ON" or "RUN" position.

If you forget your personal code, contact your retailer. Your retailer is authorized to obtain the factory programmed code that was assigned to your radio to reset your system.

If any tampering is detected by the radio, the radio will display "Err9" and the radio will be permanently locked. You will need to contact your retailer to reset your system.

Deactivating the Theft Deterrent Feature

To deactivate the system so your retailer can perform service on your vehicle, enter your personal four-digit code using steps 1 through 9 above. After completing those steps, the display will show OFF indicating that the radio is in the deactivated mode. When your vehicle is return to you, remember to reactivate the system using steps 1 through 10 above.

If you do not see the OFF confirmation, then the wrong code was entered and you will need to try to enter it again.

Unlocking the Theft-Deterrent Feature After a Power Loss (When You Know Your Four-Digit Code)

When the theft deterrent feature is active or secure (SEC), the radio can enter the locked state if power is removed from the radio for a longer period. If -- -- -- -- is shown on the display, you may enter your personal four-digit code by performing steps 4 through 9 from the Activating the Theft Deterrent Feature section. If the proper code is entered, the radio will return to the activated mode and normal operation shall return.

If the wrong code is entered, the display will momentarily show an error message and all radio functions will continue to be disabled. If the radio returns to display -- -- -- --, you can try to enter your personal four-digit code again if you know it.

If you enter the wrong code three times, LOCK will appear on the display. Contact your retailer. Your retailer is authorized to obtain the factory programmed code that is assigned to the radio to reset the system.

Unlocking the Theft Deterrent Feature (If You Do Not Remember Your Four-Digit Code)

If you forget your personal code, if the radio theft deterrent feature is accidentally activated with an unknown number, or if the radio is in the locked mode, contact your retailer. Your retailer is authorized to obtain the factory programmed code that is assigned to your radio to reset you system.
