Scraping and/or Clunking Noise from the Front of Vehicle with Vehicle in Motion

Subject:Scraping and/or Clunking Noise from the Front of the Vehicle with Vehicle in Motion (Replace Aluminum Wheel)

Models:1995-1996 Saturn SC2 Coupes built before and including VIN TZ208932, equipped with optional aluminum wheels (PG5)



Condition

With the vehicle in motion, a scraping and/or clunking noise may be heard from the front of the vehicle. These noises may be more pronounced during hard turns. This condition may occur after the tires and wheels have been rotated.

Cause

The inboard side of the front wheel(s) may contact the front brake caliper support bracket(s).

Correction

Refer tot he following procedure to correct this condition.

Procedure

  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly from the side of the vehicle, where the noise originates from.
  2. Inspect the inboard side of the wheel for scrape marks near the wheel mounting holes.
  3. 2.1. If the wheel has scrape marks, replace the wheel with a new aluminum (P/N 21012838).
    2.2. If the wheel does not have scrape marks, refer to diagnostic information in the appropriate service manual and/or other Technical Information Bulletins.
