Transaxle Whine Noise in 2nd Gear Only

Subject:Transaxle Whine Noise in 2nd Gear Only (Replace 2nd/Reverse Drive Gear)

Models:1998-1999 Saturn vehicles equipped with Base Automatic (MP6) Transaxles built after 1998 VIN WZ312775 through 1999 VIN

Condition

Some customers may comment about excessive whine noise in 2nd gear only that is related to vehicle speed (pitch increases with vehicle speed). The noise becomes audible soon after 1-2 upshift and is present until the transaxle upshifts to 3rd gear. The whine noise is most noticeable while driving the vehicles in Manual D2.

Cause

Improperly machined gear surface on the 2nd/Reverse Drive gear.

Correction

Disassemble transaxle and replace the 2nd/Reverse Drive Gear assembly (P/N 21003233).

Procedure

  1. Confirm that VIN is greater than 1998 VIN WZ312775 and less than or equal to 1999 VIN XZ114349.
  2. Verify the whine noise matches the symptoms outlined above. Drive the vehicle in D@ to isolate 2nd gear. Next, place the vehicle in D4 and drive vehicle normally, allowing the transaxle to reach 3rd and 4th gears. Determine if the noise is present once the vehicle reaches 3rd or 4th gear.
  3. • If the noise is still present in other gears, refer to the diagnosis section of the appropriate model year Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.
    • If the whine noise is only present in D2, continue with step 3 of this procedure.
  4. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. (Refer to "Automatic Transaxle Removal" in the "Out - of-Vehicle Service" section of the appropriate model year Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.)
  5. Remove Input and Output Shafts per the service manual procedure.

  6. Object Number: 863950 Size: SH
  7. Remove the 2nd/Reverse thrust bearing. Use care not to scratch shaft surface.
  8. Remove and replace the 2nd/Rev Drive Gear (P/N 21003233).
  9. Reassemble and reinstall transaxle into vehicle according to procedure in the appropriate model year Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.
