Removal Procedure
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
.
- Remove the air induction system. (DOHC shown, SOHC similar.)
- Remove the small retainers at the cable ends.
- Disconnect the cable ends from the shift control housing.
- Remove the large cable to clutch housing retainers.
Notice: Do not drag cable boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.
- Lift the cable out
of the clutch housing bracket.
- Remove the shifter control assembly.
Important: The carpet is held together by a hook and loop type tape.
- Separate the carpeting at the front of the dash under the shift cables.
- Remove the retainers, on both sides of the cable pass-through opening,
holding the sound deadening material.
- Roll back the sound deadening material at the front of the dash to gain
access to the cable pass-through grommet.
Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned.
To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support
for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.
Important: When removing and installing shift cables, it is helpful to have a second person
inside the vehicle to guide the cables and prevent them from being tangled.
- For service replacement shift cables, perform the following steps:
11.2. | Remove the cable grommet from the front of the dash by removing the two
retaining nuts and pushing the grommet and the retaining plate into the vehicle. |
11.3. | Lower the vehicle and remove the cables. |
- For production shift cables, perform the following
steps:
| Notice: There is an extra retaining tab on the passenger side of the cable pass-through
grommet (indicated by the thin arrow). Removing the grommet passenger side first may
cause damage to the floor pan.

12.1. | Place a large flat blade screwdriver against
the driver's side of the cable pass-through grommet as shown. |
12.2. | Push the grommet toward the passenger side of the vehicle and outward
to disengage the grommet from the floor pan. |
| Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned.

12.4. | Remove the cable and cable pass-through grommet from the outside of the vehicle. |
Installation Procedure
Important: All service replacement shift cables will have the bolt in type pass-through
grommet.
Important: The bolt in type cable pass-through grommet is installed from the inside of
the vehicle.
- For service replacement shift cables, perform
the following steps:
1.1. | Separate and fold back the sound deadener from the front of the dash. |
| Important: Make sure the insulation material does not become trapped between the grommet
and the front of the dash.

1.2. | Place the cables and the retaining plate through the front of the dash and push
the grommet into the opening being sure to properly align the grommet pilot into the
front of the dash. |
1.4. | Place the retaining plate on the studs and install the nuts. |
Tighten
Tighten the shift cable pass-through grommet nuts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
- For production shift cables, perform the following steps:
| Important: The snap in type cable pass-through grommet is installed from the outside of
the vehicle.

2.2. | Guide the cables through the cable pass-through hole in the floor pan. |
2.3. | Insert the cable pass-through grommet into the cable pass-through hole
in the floor pan, engaging the passenger side of the grommet first. Snap the driver's
side of the grommet into place by pressing inward and toward the passenger side of
the vehicle. |
- Lower the vehicle.
Notice: Do not drag cable boot through bracket hole as boot damage may occur.
- Insert the cables into the clutch housing
and install the retainers. Use care not to kink the cables and be sure the cables
are not crossed.
Important: The knurled edge on the shift cable must face up.
- Connect the cables to the shift arms on the shift control housing and install
the retainers.
- Install the air induction system. (DOHC shown,
SOHC similar.)
- Install the shifter control assembly.
- Replace the sound deadening material and resecure it to the front of the
dash.
- Replace the carpeting.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
.
