CONDITION: The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE ENGINE SOON telltale lamp) may be On and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0171 (Learned Fuel Control - Fuel System Too Lean) is present or stored in PCM malfunction history.
CAUSE: Condition may be caused by lean operation due to fuel system component variation, which is aggravated by the use of some oxygenated and/or reformulated fuels.
CORRECTION: Install service PCM calibration if indicated in the procedures section of this bulletin.
PROCEDURES
Using a Scan tool, or the Saturn Service Stall (SSS), determine the calibration "End Model" currently loaded in the PCM.
- If the "End Model" is not the one identified in the following "PCM Calibrations (End Model)" table, then re-calibrate the PCM.
- If the "End Model" is the one identified in the following "PCM Calibrations (End Model)" table, then refer to DTC P0171 diagnostics in the appropriate year "Powertrain Controls Service Manual."
Install new PCM calibration according to the calibration in the following "PCM Calibrations (End Model)" table. (Refer to "Reprogramming EEPROM" in the "Service Stall System User Guide.")
If SSS version 40.5 or greater is not available, call Saturn Customer Support Center at 1 (800) 7SATURN (1 (800) 772 - 8876), prompt 3. In Canada, call 1 (800) 828 - 6860 for English, or 1 (800) 503-3222 for French.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
