New Design Upper Engine Mount Assembly

This bulletin contains information on a new second design upper engine mount assembly. All 1996 Saturns built after and including VIN TZ371463 are built with a second design upper engine mount assembly (P/N 21012864). This second design upper engine mount assembly requires new, shorter engine mount assembly front cover studs (P/N 21007585). These new studs are 6 mm shorter than the odd studs.

The second design upper engine mount assembly (P/N 21012864) should be used on 1996 vehicles built after including VIN TZ371463 and 1997 vehicles.

Continue to use the first design upper engine mount assembly (P/N 21012185) on all 1992 - 1995 vehicles, and 1996 vehicles built before including VIN TZ371462. Once stock in the first design upper engine mount assembly (P/N 21012864) can be installed on vehicles built after the VIN breakpoint.

To use the second design upper engine mount assembly on vehicles built before including VIN TZ371462, the old, longer upper engine mount assembly front cover studs must be replaced with the new, shorter engine mount assembly front cover studs.

Important: The procedure on the following page should be used for installation of both new and old upper engine mount assembly front cover studs. The installation procedure for the upper engine mount assembly front cover studs, in the "Powertrain Mounts" section of the 1991--1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 "Chassis Service Manuals" is incorrect.

1. Remove the upper engine mount assembly front cover studs.
2. If reinstalling existing upper engine mount assembly front cover studs, thoroughly clean threadlocker from all threads, using a wire brush or wire wheel. Use Saturn Choke Aerosol Cleaner (P/N 21007127) or Saturn Brake and Choke Cleaner (P/N 21007432), or equivalent, to remove any remaining torque retention compound.

Caution: PROTECT YOURSELF BY WEARING SAFETY GLASSES WHEN PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.

3. Thoroughly clean the upper engine mount assembly front cover stud holes using a 10 mm x 1.5 tap. Use compressed air to remove particles from the holes.

Notice: To prevent damage tot he front cover when upper engine mount assembly front cover studs are installed, do not over apply LOCTITE ^® 242 Threadlocker or equivalent; do not allow LOCTITE ^® Threadlocker or equivalent to accumulate in the bottoms of the stud holds.

4. Apply LOCTITE ^® 242 Threadlocker (P/N 21485277) or equivalent to six to eight middle threads of the upper engine mount assembly front cover studs.
5. Install upper engine mount assembly front cover studs into engine front cover.

Tighten
Torque: 25 N·m (19 lb ft)
