Service Information on New Oil Pump Cover

A design change to the oil pump cover was made during the 1996 model year to help lubricate the timing chain system by directing a constant flow of oil onto the timing chain. This was done by adding a 1 mm hole to the oil pump cover.

When servicing a timing chain on all vehicles built before and including VIN TZ320852, install a new timing chain kit P/N 21008552 (SOHC - LK0/L24) or P/N 21008553 (DOHC - LL0). Follow the procedures under oil pump replacement in the appropriate year "Engine/Fuel/Air Intake/Exhaust Service Manual," or "Engine Mechanical Service Manual."

When servicing a timing chain on vehicles built after and including VIN TZ320853, the timing chain kit is not required. Replaced only applicable parts.

Important: When replacing the oil pump cover, new oil pump cover bolts (P/N 21006630) must be used.

The first design oil pump cover (P/N 21000718) will no longer be available from Saturn Service Parts Operation.

To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System using the appropriate Electronic Labor Time Guide and Labor Operation Code J0824 (Install Timing Chain Kit).
