SA9164C Clamp Pliers

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the outer tie rod end. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  4. Remove the inner tie rod to outer tie rod jam nut. Record the number of threads.

  5. Object Number: 891777  Size: SH
  6. Remove the outer boot clamp.
  7. Remove the inner boot clamp using a cutter. Discard the clamp.
  8. Remove the steering gear boot from the steering gear.
  9. Clean any dirt or foreign debris from the boot sealing surfaces and steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install a new inner boot clamp on the steering gear boot.

  2. Object Number: 892948  Size: SH

    Important: The sealing surfaces must be clean, dry and free of debris prior to boot installation.

  3. Apply grease provided in the service kit to the indicated locations.
  4. Slide the boot over the tie rod end in order to seat the boot in the steering gear groove.

  5. Object Number: 862226  Size: SH
  6. Use the SA9164C to crimp the clamp securing the boot to the steering gear housing.
  7. Install the clamp on outer end of the boot.

  8. Object Number: 860195  Size: SH
  9. Thread the jam nut on to the inner tie rod the number of threads recorded during removal.
  10. Install the outer tie rod end. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  11. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
