Subject: | Service Information Regarding Identification of First Design and Second Design Fuel Tank Assemblies and a Rubber Fuel Tank Mounting Shim That is Required on First Design Tanks |
Models: | 2000 Saturn L- Series vehicles built before and including VIN YY602966 |
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide fuel tank identification and rubber mounting shim information that must be followed any time a fuel tank is removed from the vehicle.
Important: Two fuel tank assemblies can be found on L-Series vehicles. First design tank assemblies require a rubber mounting shim to be installed on the tank and second design tank assemblies do not require a rubber mounting shim.
PARTS REQUIREMENTS: | 21019723 | Shim - F/Tnk |
Important: There were two types of fuel tank assemblies used during early production of L-Series vehicles. Both types are under the same part number. The first design tank assembly has a rubber shim on the top of the tank covering the fuel line coming from the fuel pump and going to the fuel filter. The second design tank assembly incorporates a design change and does not require the addition of the rubber shim.
Both tank assembly designs will have a label on the front vertical surface of the tank. This label will be used to determine whether the tank is a first design or second design. It will be necessary to lift the plastic fuel tank out of the metal fuel tank heat shield to see this label. The first four digits of the serial number on the label will be LS27, LS30, LS31, or LS32.
LS27, LS30 or LS31 indicates a first design that DOES require the rubber shim.
LS32 indicates a second design tank that DOES NOT require the rubber shim.
The illustration above shows the location of the fuel tank mounting shim. When servicing a first design fuel tank assembly and rubber shim requires replacement, order rubber shim (P/N 21019723) and install on fuel tank at location shown in illustration above.
