Clutch fails to release

The pedal travel is short. The object interferes with the pedal.

Move the object.

Hydraulic system failure

Follow the Clutch Hydraulic System Diagnosis procedures and replace the faulty components as necessary.

The disc hub is binding.

Clean the hub and shaft, lightly grease the shaft with high-temp grease P/N 21005995 or equivalent, and replace if necessary.

The clutch disc is warped or bent.

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

The pressure plate assembly to flywheel bolts are loose.

Torque the bolts to specification and verify operation.

The pressure plate assembly is faulty or damaged.

Inspect the pressure plate assembly and replace if necessary.

The input shaft splines are worn or damaged.

Inspect the input shaft and replace if necessary.

No pressure or very little resistance in the clutch pedal

Hydraulic system failure

Follow the Clutch Hydraulic System Diagnosis procedure and replace the faulty components as necessary.

Clutch feels spongy when depressed

Pedal effort high for the entire pedal travel

Follow the Clutch Hydraulic System Diagnosis procedure and replace the faulty components as necessary.

The clutch facing is worn.

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

The release bearing is binding.

Inspect the slave cylinder release bearings, and replace the slave cylinder if necessary.

The pressure plate assembly is damaged or faulty.

Inspect the pressure plate assembly and replace if necessary.

The pedal bushings are dry or worn.

Lubricate the bushings with lithium grease, and replace the pedal if necessary.

High clutch engage point

The clutch facing is worn.

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

Clutch is slipping

Oil soaked clutch facing

Identify/seal the source of the oil leak, and replace the clutch disc.

The clutch facing is torn.

Replace the clutch disc.

The clutch facing is worn.

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

The clutch facing is burnt or glazed.

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

The pressure plate assembly to flywheel bolts are loose.

Torque the bolts to specification and inspect the clutch disc. Replace if necessary.

The pressure plate assembly or flywheel is faulty or damaged.

Inspect the components and replace if necessary.

Hydraulic clutch failure

Follow the Clutch Hydraulic System Diagnosis procedure and replace the faulty components as necessary.

Clutch is grabbing, chattering, or shuddering

The powertrain mounts are misadjusted or loose.

Torque the bolts to specification and inspect.

The clutch disc is warped or bent.

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

Clutch disc damper failure

Inspect the clutch disc and replace if necessary.

The pressure plate assembly or flywheel is warped, faulty, or damaged.

Inspect the components and replace if necessary.

The clutch disc hub is binding.

Clean the hub and shaft, lightly grease the shaft with high-temp grease P/N 21005995 or equivalent, and replace if necessary.

Light oil or grease on the clutch facing

Identify and seal the source of the leak and replace the clutch disc.

The clutch facing is burnt or glazed.

Replace the clutch disc.

The pressure plate to flywheel bolts are loose.

Torque the bolts to specification and inspect the clutch disc. Replace if necessary.

The input shaft splines are worn or damaged.

Inspect the input shaft and replace if necessary.

The release bearing is binding.

Inspect the slave cylinder release bearing, and replace the slave cylinder if necessary.

Clutch is noisy when disengaging

The release bearing is faulty.

Inspect the release bearing and replace if necessary.

The pedal bushing is worn or dry.

Lubricate the bushings with lithium grease. Replace the pedal if necessary.

Clutch is noisy when engaging

The release bearing is faulty.

Inspect the slave cylinder release bearing, and replace the slave cylinder if necessary.

The pedal bushing is worn or dry.

Lubricate the bushings with lithium grease. Replace the pedal if necessary.

Clutch pedal is squeaking

The pedal bushing is worn or dry.

Lubricate the bushings with lithium grease. Replace the pedal if necessary.

The clutch master cylinder push rod requires lubrication.

Check and lubricate the clutch master cylinder push rod where it attaches to the clutch pedal and where it enters the master cylinder.

Hydraulic system failure

Follow the Clutch Hydraulic System Diagnosis procedure and replace the faulty components as necessary.

Clutch pedal is buzzing/growling

Torque the bolts to specification and inspect the clutch disc. Replace if necessary.
