Water Pump Replacement L61

Tools Required

J 43651 Water Pump Holding Tool

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 896381  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air inlet tube and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  3. Drain the coolant. Refer to Draining Coolant .

  4. Object Number: 895179  Size: SH
  5. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.

  6. Object Number: 895532  Size: SH

    Important: Twist the water feed pipe while pulling to remove it from the water pump.

  7. Remove the thermostat and the water feed assembly bolts.

  8. Object Number: 896331  Size: SH
  9. Remove the water pump sprocket access plate from the front cover.

  10. Object Number: 896348  Size: SH
  11. Use the bolts removed from the sprocket access plate and install the J 43651 .
  12. Remove the water pump sprocket bolts.

  13. Object Number: 896373  Size: SH

    Important: Be sure to remove the retaining bolt that is accessed from the front of the engine block.

  14. Remove the water pump retaining bolts.
  15. Remove the water pump assembly.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 897618  Size: SH

    Important: Prior to installing the water pump, read the entire procedure. Pay special attention to avoid part damage and to ensure proper sealing.

  1. Install the water pump assembly.
  2. Install the water pump bolts. Initially finger tighten the bolts.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  4. Install the water pump sprocket and retaining bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump sprocket to water pump bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  6. Remove the J 43651 .
  7. Install the water pump sprocket access plate.

  9. Install the water feed tube.
  10. Lubricate the feed tube O-ring with silicone gel lubricant.
  11. Install the water feed tube by twisting and pushing it toward the water pump. Take care not to tear or damage the O-ring.
  12. Install the thermostat housing to block bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the thermostat housing to block bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  14. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.

  15. Object Number: 896381  Size: SH
  16. Install the air cleaner assembly and the air inlet tube. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  19. Add the coolant.

Water Pump Replacement L81

Tools Required

    • J43405 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
    • SA9105E Engine Support Fixture (3 Bar)

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Do not remove the cap from a hot system. Allow the system to cool, then slowly remove the cap.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner inlet duct from the throttle body.

  3. Object Number: 894225  Size: SH

    Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

  4. Raise and support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the left front wheel.
  6. Remove the splash shield bolts.
  7. Remove the splash shield.
  8. Lower the vehicle.

  9. Object Number: 893254  Size: SH
  10. Loosen the water pump pulley and power steering pump pulley attachment bolts. The accessory drive belt tension provides resistance to enable the loosening of the water pump pulley bolts. Do not remove the bolts at this time.
  11. Install the SA9105E and J43405 to support the engine weight.

  12. Object Number: 894336  Size: SH

    Important: Removal of the accessory drive belt requires removal of the right front engine mount.

  13. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt Replacement .

  14. Object Number: 896418  Size: SH

    Important: Use caution when releasing the retaining tabs to reduce the risk of breakage when removing the wiring harness cover.

  15. Release the plastic retaining tabs on the wiring harness channel on the front cover and remove the cover.
  16. Note the wiring harness routing.
  17. Remove the wiring harness from the channel.
  18. Remove the water pump pulley bolt.
  19. Remove the water pump pulley.
  20. Remove the power steering pump pulley bolts.
  21. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
  22. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner bolts.
  23. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.

  25. Remove the front timing belt cover bolts.
  26. Remove the front timing belt cover.
  27. Inspect the sealing strip on the outer edge of the front timing belt cover for cracks and/or tears.

  28. Object Number: 894715  Size: SH
  29. Remove the water pump and O-ring seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 894715  Size: SH
  1. Install the new water pump O-ring seal.
  2. Install the water pump.
  3. Install the water pump bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 894303  Size: SH
  5. Install the front timing belt cover.
  6. Install the front timing belt cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the front timing belt cover bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).


    Object Number: 896418  Size: SH
  8. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  9. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the belt tensioner bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  11. Install the power steering pump pulley and water pump pulley.
  12. Install the power steering pump pulley and water pump pulley bolts.
  13. Snug the power steering pump pulley and water pump pulley bolts. The bolts will be tightened when the accessory drive belt is installed.
  14. Route the wiring harness into the wiring harness channel.
  15. Install the wiring harness channel.
  16. Install the wiring harness channel extension to the right lower side of the wiring harness channel.

  17. Object Number: 894336  Size: SH
  18. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  19. Tighten the water pump pulley and power steering pump pulley bolts.
  20. Tighten

        • Tighten the water pump pulley bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).
        • Tighten the steering pump pulley bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    Object Number: 893254  Size: SH
  21. Remove the SA9105E and the J43405 .

  22. Object Number: 894225  Size: SH
  23. Raise and support the vehicle.
  24. Install the splash shield.
  25. Install the splash shield bolts. Tighten the splash shield bolts until seated. Do not strip the bolts.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the splash shield bolts to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  27. Install the right front wheel.

  28. Object Number: 894285  Size: SH
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Install the air resonator inlet duct to the throttle body.
  31. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  32. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

Water Pump Replacement L81 Auxiliary

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 894608  Size: SH
  1. Remove the puller fan and shroud assembly. Refer to Puller Fan removal procedure in this section.
  2. Remove the auxiliary water pump inlet hose to auxiliary water pump inlet clamp and remove hose.
  3. Remove the auxiliary water pump outlet hose to auxiliary water pump outlet clamp and remove hose.

  4. Object Number: 894612  Size: SH
  5. Remove the auxiliary water pump to fan shroud clip by lifting the clip tab with a screwdriver and sliding clips outward.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 894612  Size: SH
  1. Install the auxiliary water pump to fan shroud slips.

  2. Object Number: 894608  Size: SH
  3. Install auxiliary water pump inlet hose to auxiliary water pump inlet and install clamp at 12 o' clock position.
  4. Install auxiliary water pump outlet hose to auxiliary water pump outlet and install the clamp so tangs face rear of vehicle.
  5. Install the puller fan and shroud assembly. Refer to Puller Fan installation in this section,
  6. Use the fresh water to rinse away coolant that was spilled during service.
