Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to advise retailers to verify the proper function of the valet key before delivery to customers who have purchased a retailer-installed valet key. Key slot passage tolerance modifications needed to accommodate the function of the valet key to the ignition cylinder and trunk lid lock cylinder were not available for part of the 2003 ION Sedan production, which may affect the functionality of the valet key. Follow the service procedure included in this bulletin to verify valet key functionality and, if necessary, replace ignition lock cylinder and/or trunk lid lock cylinder.
Service Procedure
Determine whether the valet key functions properly in each application. Replace ignition lock cylinder and/or trunk lid lock cylinder as necessary.
| • | If valet key does not work in ignition, replace ignition lock cylinder. Refer to "Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement" procedure in the Steering section of the 2003 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 1, and "Key and Lock Cylinder Coding" procedure in the General Information section of the 2003 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 1. |
| • | If valet key works in ignition, ignition cylinder does not need to be replaced. |
| • | If valet key opens trunk lid, replace trunk lid lock cylinder. Refer to "Lock Cylinder Replacement - Rear Compartment Lid" procedure in the Body and Accessories section of the 2003 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3, and "Key and Lock Cylinder Coding" procedure in the General Information section of the 2003 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 1. |
