With current trends in automotive styles and design, it is essential that the correct towing equipment is used to tow a vehicle. Try to have a retailer or a professional towing service tow your vehicle. The usual towing equipment is a wheel lift or a car carrier.
Front-wheel drive vehicle equipped with the VTi variable transmission or five-speed automatic transmission should not be towed with all four wheels on the ground. To properly tow these vehicles, they should towed from the front by putting the front wheels on a dolly.
We recommend that you contact Saturn Emergency Roadside Assistance (U.S. Customers) or either the Saturn Customer Communication Centre or Roadside Assistance Program (Canadian Customers) if your vehicle should require towing. If you want to tow your vehicle behind another vehicle for recreation purposes, such as behind a motor home, see Recreational Vehicle Towing .
If your vehicle has been changed or modified since it was factory-new by adding aftermarket items like fog lamps, aero skirting, or tires and wheels, theis illustration may not be correct.
When you call, tell the towing service:
• | That your vehicle can only be towed with a vehicle carrier or wheel lift tow truck. |
• | That your vehicle has front-wheel drive. |
• | The make, model, and year of your vehicle. |
• | Whether you can still move the shift lever. |
• | If there was an accident, what was damaged. |
In the case of a rear end collision where rear end towing is impossible, your vehicle can be towed with the front drive wheels on the ground, for off-road recovery only.
When your vehicle is being towed backwards, have the ignition turned to "ACC" (Accessory) position, and all of the accessories turned off to avoid battery drain. The steering wheel should be clamped in a straight-ahead position, with a clamping device designed for towing service. Do not use the vehicle's steering column lock for this. The transmission should be in "N" (Neutral) and the parking brake released.
Consult your dealer or a professional towing service if you need to have your disabled vehicle towed. See Roadside Assistance Program .
