Removal Procedure
- Remove the front floor console. Refer to
Front Floor Console Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
- Ensure that the park brake lever is in the fully released position.
- Release the tension from the park brake cable system at the front cable adjusting
nut (1).
Using ONLY HAND TOOLS, loosen the adjusting nut (1) completely to the
end of the front cable threaded rod.
- Remove the rear seat lower cushion. Refer to
Rear Seat Cushion Replacement
in Seats.
- Remove the rear carpet retainers. Refer to
Rear Carpet Retainer Replacement
in Interior Trim.
- Position the carpet forward in order to access the rear park brake cables
and body pass-thru grommets.
- With the park brake lever (1) in the released position, release
the appropriate rear park brake cable (2) from the cable equalizer.
- Release the rear cable fitting from the park brake lever bracket and remove
the cable from the lever assembly.
- Release the rear park brake cable body pass-thru grommet.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- If the park brake cable is being reused, release the tab on the underbody
retainer (2) and remove the park brake cable from the retainer.
- If a new park brake cable will be installed, release the underbody retainer (2)
from the vehicle underbody.
Important: Do NOT pull on the park brake cable to release the C-shaped retainer (1)
on the cable from the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot.
- Using a suitable tool, carefully pry against the outboard side of the C-shaped
retainer (1) on the park brake cable, to release the retainer from the bracket
at the rear axle trailing arm pivot.
- Remove the cable from the opening in the vehicle underbody.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, depress the visible retaining tab (1)
on the park brake cable fitting, then tilt the released side of the cable end back
into the backing plate.
- Rotate the park brake cable to expose the other retaining tab.
- Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, depress the remaining retaining tab on
the park brake cable fitting, and release the cable fitting from the backing plate.
- Move the majority of the cable return spring back through the opening
in the backing plate.
- Push the cable toward the rear of the vehicle, just enough to clear the
cable end from the slot on the park brake lever.
- Using a flat-bladed screwdriver, lift the cable to fully release the cable
from the lever, then remove the cable.
Installation Procedure
- Insert the park brake cable through the opening in the backing plate. Only install
the cable return spring to just rearward of the spring positioning tab on the backing
plate.
- Push the cable toward the rear of the vehicle, along the outside of the
secondary brake shoe, until the cable end is positioned just past the slot on the
park brake lever.
- While holding the cable in position from front to rear, move the cable
end to the back of the park brake lever.
- Press the cable down into the slot on the lever, then pull the cable toward
the front of the vehicle to secure the cable end to the slot.
- While continuing to pull the cable away from the lever, insert a flat-bladed
screwdriver into the opening on the lever to prevent the cable from lifting out of
the slot on the lever.
- Move the cable return spring through the opening in the backing plate.
- Secure the cable fitting to the backing plate. Attempt to pull the park
brake cable free of the backing plate, to ensure that the retaining tabs (1)
on the fitting are properly secured.
- Adjust the rear drum brakes. Refer to
Drum Brake Adjustment
in Drum Brakes.
- Install the brake drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Insert the cable through the opening in the vehicle underbody.
- Install the C-shaped retainer (1) on the park brake cable into
the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot.
- Install and secure park brake cable pass-thru
grommet (1) to the opening in the vehicle underbody.
- If a new park brake cable is being installed, secure the underbody retainer (2)
to the vehicle underbody.
- If the park brake cable is being reused, install the park brake cable
to the underbody retainer (2) and press the tab into place to secure.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Secure the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket. Attempt to pull the
park brake cable free of the lever bracket, to ensure that the retaining tabs on the
fitting are properly secured.
- Install the cable end (2) to the cable equalizer.
- Reposition the carpet to the installed position.
- Install the rear carpet retainers. Refer to
Rear Carpet Retainer Replacement
in Interior Trim.
- Install the rear seat lower cushion. Refer to
Rear Seat Cushion Replacement
in Seats.
- Adjust the park brake cable tension. Refer to
Park Brake Adjustment
.
- Install the front floor console. Refer to
Front Floor Console Replacement
in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
