Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement Prior to VIN 5B426447

Tools Required

    • J 23444-A Extreme Press Lubricant
    • CH-47914 Bearing Replacer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the wheel bearing/hub/drum/studs assembly. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 1582577  Size: SH
  3. Remove the wheel bearing retainer clip.

  4. Object Number: 1625708  Size: SH
  5. Insert the threaded rod (1) through the bearing.
  6. Important: Ensure the raised portion of the spacers fit inside the inner bearing race.

  7. Position the CH-47914-2 large spacer (6) and the CH-47914-3 small spacer (3) on the rod.
  8. Position the 2 flat washers (2, 5) and the 2 nuts (4, 7) on the rod.

  10. Tighten the nuts in order to position the spacers on the bearing.

  11. Object Number: 1625733  Size: SH
  12. Ensure the majority of the rod protrudes from the outboard side of the drum.
  13. Apply a light coat of J 23444-A on the rod.

    Important: Position the thrust bearing between the receiver and the flat washer.

  15. Position the receiver (2) and the thrust bearing (5) on the rod.
  16. Position the flat washer (3) and the nut (4) on the rod.

  18. Tighten the nut.

  20. Remove the bearing from the brake drum.

  22. Remove the bearing from the CH-47914 .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1626718  Size: SH
  1. Using the CH-47914 , place the rear wheel bearing (6) on the rod (8).
  2. Important: Ensure the raised portion of the spacers fit inside the inner bearing race.

  3. Position the CH-47914-2 large spacer (2) and the CH-47914-3 small spacer (3) on the rod.
  4. Position the 2 flat washers (5, 7) and the 2 nuts (1, 4) on the rod.

  5. Object Number: 1627104  Size: SH
  6. Tighten the nuts in order to position the spacers on the bearing.
  7. Ensure the large spacer is near the end of the rod.

  8. Object Number: 1627393  Size: SH
  9. Insert the rod into the rear brake drum. Ensure the large spacer is on the outboard side of the rod.
  10. Apply a light coat of J 23444-A on the rod.

  11. Object Number: 1627428  Size: SH

    Important: Position the thrust bearing (5) between the receiver (2) and the flat washer (3).

  12. Position the receiver and the thrust bearing on the rod.
  13. Position the flat washer and the nut (4) on the rod.

  14. Object Number: 1627463  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure the wheel bearing is properly seated into the drum. Do not use power tools on the nut. Pressing the bearing does not require much force.

  15. Tighten the nut in order to press the wheel bearing into the drum.
  16. Remove the CH-47914 .

  18. Install the wheel bearing retainer clip.
  19. Install the wheel bearing/hub/drum/studs assembly. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.

Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement VIN 5B426447 and After

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the rear wheel speed sensor, if equipped. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement .
  2. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 1753792  Size: SH
  4. Unstake the caulking nut (4).
  5. Remove the caulking nut.
  6. Important: Pull the wheel bearing and hub assembly straight off the spindle. The 2 inner wheel bearing races may not be secure.

  7. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly (7) from the spindle (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1753792  Size: SH

    Important: Slide the wheel bearing and hub assembly straight onto the spindle. Use care in order to properly position the wheel bearing races on the spindle.

  1. Install the wheel bearing and hub assembly (7) to the spindle (1).
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the caulking nut (4) to the spindle.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 190 N·m (140 lb ft).

  5. Stake the caulking nut.
  6. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  7. Install the rear wheel speed sensor, if equipped. Refer to Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement .
