Did you review the Seat Belt System Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2

Go to Symptoms - Seat Belts

  1. Close the driver door.
  2. Do not connect the driver seat belt.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  4. The seat belt warning alarm should chime approximately one chime per second for approximately 5 seconds.
  5. The seat belt indicator flashes.
  6. The seat belt indicator goes out and the alarm stops chiming when the seat belt is fastened.

Does the seat belt warning system operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

  1. Disconnect the seat belt switch connector.
  2. Test the operation of the seat belt switch. The switch should be open between terminals 5 and 6 when the seat belt is buckled and closed when the seat belt is not buckled.

Does the seat belt switch operate properly?

Test the seat belt switch signal circuit for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Test the seat belt switch ground circuit for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Inspect for a poor connection of the harness connector at the instrument panel cluster. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Replace the seat belt switch. Refer to Seat Belt Buckle Replacement - Left Front .

Replace the instrument panel cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
