Subject: | It is Necessary to Program the VIN Number into Replacement PCMs |
Models: | 2005-2007 Pontiac Vibe |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
If the PCM is replaced, it is necessary to program the VIN number into the PCM using the Pass-Thru programming method in TIS2000/TIS2Web. Since the replacement PCM comes with the calibrations already installed, the vehicle will start and run fine if the VIN is not programmed into it. However, the vehicle will fail emission inspection testing if the PCM does not contain a VIN number, or if it contains an incorrect VIN number. Additionally, the SES light will eventually come on due to a P0630 DTC (VIN not stored).
If this concern is encountered, it will be necessary to use Pass-Thru Programming to program the VIN number into the replacement PCM. To perform Pass-Thru Programming, connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle's DLC (Data Link Connector) and the TIS terminal at the same time, and follow the instructions on the TIS screen. The TIS terminal will communicate with the PCM by going through the Tech 2. It is not necessary to request information from the PCM when performing Pass-Thru Programming Method.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
