Removal Procedure
  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement .
  2. Disconnect the shift cables from the transaxle assembly. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement .
  3. Disconnect the backup lamp switch connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the backup lamp switch from the transaxle.

    5. Object Number: 847690 Size: SH
  5. Remove the 3 bolts and the shift control support bracket from the transaxle.

    6. Object Number: 847692 Size: SH
  6. Remove the 2 bolts and the control shift lever from the transaxle

    7. Important: When removing the shift control lever notice that there is a shift control lever bushing and that it must be replaced in its original position, or incorrect shifting may occur.

  7. Remove the shift control lever bushing from the transaxle.

  8. Remove the lock ball assembly from the transaxle.

  9. Remove the 4 gear case lever bolts.
  10. Remove the gear case lever assembly from the transaxle.
  11. Remove the gasket.

Installation Procedure
  1. Install a new gasket on the gear case lever assembly.
  2. Install the gear case lever assembly in the transaxle.

    3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the 4 gear case lever retaining bolts

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  4. Install the gear shift guide case gasket.

  5. Install the gear shift guide case and the 4 bolts.

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the gear shift guide case bolts to 20 N·m (14 lb ft).

  6. Install the lock ball assembly in the transaxle case.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the lock ball assembly to 29 N·m (22 lb ft).

  7. Install the shift control lever bushing on the shift control lever.

    8. Object Number: 847689 Size: SH
  8. Install the shift control lever on the transaxle case.
  9. Install the 2 lever retaining bolts.

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (19 lb ft).

  10. Install the shift control lever support bracket on the transaxle case.
  11. Install the 3 bracket retaining bolts.

    12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 11 N·m (8 lb ft).

  12. Install the back up lamp switch with a new gasket.

    13. Tighten
    Tighten the switch to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  13. Connect the back up lamp switch electrical connector.
  14. Connect the shift cables.
  15. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement .
