DTC P0630: VIN Not Programmed or Mismatched - Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Diagnostic Fault Information

Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

This DTC sets when the Powertrain control module (PCM) has determined that the vehicle identification number (VIN) is not stored in the PCM memory. When the control module is replaced, the VIN must be programmed into the control module memory.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The control module is ON or awake.
    • The DTC runs continuously when the above condition is met

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The PCM detects that no vehicle identification number (VIN) is stored in memory.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0630 is a type A DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0630 is a type A DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

Some diagnostics will not run when the MIL is illuminated and DTC P0630 is set. Always program the VIN to the control module immediately after replacement.

If there are difficulties programming the VIN, ensure that all connections to the PCM and equipment are correct. Ensure that the ignition is ON, and the engine is not running. Ensure that the latest software is installed and all programming procedures are performed correctly.

Circuit/System Verification

Important: The PCM cannot determine if the VIN programmed into the control module is valid. Always verify that the VIN displayed on the scan tool is correct for that vehicle.

Ignition ON, observe the Vehicle Information under I/M System Information on the scan tool. The VIN information should match the vehicles VIN.

If a VIN is not displayed, program the VIN with a scan tool.
If a VIN is displayed, clear the DTCs with a scan tool. If DTC P0630 sets after clearing the DTCs, replace the PCM.
