Subject: | It is Necessary to Program the VIN Number into Replacement PCMs |
Models: | 2005 - 2009 Pontiac Vibe |
This PI was superceded to include additional model years and engine RPOs, and to specify "Legacy" Pass-Thru. Please discard PIP3655A.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Replacement PCMs come with the calibrations installed already. However, it is necessary to program the VIN number into the PCM or a SES light and P0630 DTC will eventually set. The vehicle will also fail emission testing if the VIN number is not programmed into the PCM.
After installing a replacement PCM, also program the VIN number into the PCM by using the Legacy Pass-Thru Programming Method in TIS2Web to prevent a SES light and P0630 DTC in the future. To do this, follow the on-screen instructions, which will ask you to connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle's DLC (Data Link Connector) and TIS2Web terminal at the same time. The TIS terminal will communicate with the PCM by going through the Tech 2. It is not necessary to request information from the PCM when performing this procedure.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
