BATTERY RUNS DOWN / INTERMITTENT LOSS OF A/C

SUBJECT: BATTERY RUNS DOWN/INTERMITTENT LOSS OF A/C CONTROL SETTINGS (REPLACE HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY)

MODELS: 1993-95 CHEVROLET LUMINA APV/MINIVAN 1993-95 PONTIAC TRANS SPORT 1993-95 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE

CONDITION:

THE CUSTOMER MAY COMMENT ON ONE OR BOTH OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

1. THE BATTERY MAY RUN DOWN TO THE POINT WHERE THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START, IF THE VEHICLE SITS FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, THE BATTERY SHOULD BE ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT 30 DAYS. WITH THIS CONDITION, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT START IN 18 DAYS OR LESS. THIS WILL ONLY OCCUR IF THE CONTROL IS LEFT IN THE "RECIRC" MODE WHEN THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF.

2. THE CUSTOMER SELECTED HVAC CONTROL SETTINGS MAY BE LOST. THIS CONDITION IS INTERMITTENT, AND MAY BE VERY HARD TO DUPLICATE.

CAUSE:

CONDITION 1: THE A/C CONTROL ASSEMBLY HAS A PATH TO GROUND WHICH KEEPS IT ELECTRICALLY ACTIVATED IF THE CONTROL IS LEFT IN "RECIRC" MODE WHEN THE IGNITION IS SHUT OFF. THIS WILL ALLOW A PARASITIC DRAW ABOUT 14 MILLI-AMPS, WHICH WILL REDUCE THE STORAGE TIME FROM 30 TO 18 DAYS (AVERAGE).

CONDITION 2: THE SIGNAL FROM THE "A/C" REQUEST BUTTON MAY INTERMITTENTLY BE LOST.

A NEW CONTROL ASSEMBLY WAS RELEASED TO CORRECT THE ABOVE CONDITIONS, AND WENT INTO VEHICLE PRODUCTION APPROXIMATELY JANUARY 30, 1995.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY, FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS IN SECTION 1B OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
