CLICKING NOISE WHEN IN REVERSE POOR A/C PERFORMANCE

SUBJECT: CLICKING NOISE/POOR A/C PERFORMANCE WHEN IN REVERSE (REPOSITION RETAINING CLIP)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992-93 "L" CAR WITH 3.1 L ENG

CONDITION:

--------- Some owners of 1992-93 L-cars with 3.1 L (VIN T - RPO LHO) engines may experience a clicking noise when the car is put into reverse along with possible poor A/C cooling due to the loss of the refrigerant charge in the A/C system.

CAUSE:

----- The exhaust manifold in the front of the engine may rub against the compressor/condenser hose assembly near the top of the cooling fan shroud causing a rub through condition on the condenser line and loss of refrigerant in the system. (Refer to Figure 1 - View A).

CORRECTION:

---------- Retaining clip that holds the condenser line to the cooling fan shroud must be relocated. Vehicles produced after VIN PY122916 already have the retaining clip in the new location.

If the compressor/condenser hose assembly has rubbed through causing a loss of the refrigerant, it will be necessary to not only move the retaining clip but replace the hose assembly as well. Refer to Section 1 B of the appropriate service manual for the replacement procedure.

SERVICE INFORMATION

In order to reposition the retaining clip, use the following procedure.

1. Remove (2) upper fan shroud bolts.

2. Raise vehicle.

3. Remove (2) lower fan shroud bolts.

4. Lower vehicle.

5. Remove compressor/condenser hose assembly retaining clip at the top of the cooling fan shroud.

6. Reposition the cooling fan and shroud assembly in order to gain access to drill a new retaining clip hole.

NOTE: Handle the fan by the shroud ONLY, not by the blades.

7. Scribe a mark 10.5 cm ( 4 1/8") over from the inner rib on the upper right mounting arm. (Refer to Figure 2 - View A).

8. Place a straight edge, for example - a credit card, across the top of the fan shroud. Scribe a mark 11 mm (7/16") down from the bottom of the straight edge. (Refer to Figure 2 - View A).

9. Drill the new retaining clip hole. Refer to figure.

NOTE: Be careful to drill only through the fan shroud.

10. Reposition the cooling fan and shroud assembly into the car, and install (2) upper fan shroud bolts.

11. Raise vehicle.

12. Install (2) lower fan shroud bolts.

13. Lower vehicle.

14. Install new retaining clip, P/N 22573408, in the new hole, and snap into place over condenser line.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
