CAMPAIGN: SECONDARY HOOD LATCH SPRING (NEW P/N RELEASED)

Subject: SECONDARY HOOD LATCH SPRING

Models: 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier and 1992 Pontiac Sunbird

General Motors of Canada has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunbird model vehicles. The secondary hood latch spring in these vehicles may be improperly installed or missing. This could lead to a condition in which the secondary hood latch does not engage the secondary striker.

If the secondary hood latch is not engaged, and the primary hood latch were also not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open. If this were to occur while the vehicle was in motion, the hood could contact the windshield, reducing the forward vision area of the driver and a vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.

To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to inspect the hood latch assemblies of involved vehicles, and where necessary, install a new secondary hood latch spring.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
