Difficult To Shift Into Reverse Or Blocked Shifts - keywords MA5 manual transmission

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Some customers may comment about difficulty shifting into reverse or blocked shifts on the Aisin RPO MA5 manual transmission.

Affected vehicles include the following: All (GMT355, GMT345 & GMX020)

2006 - 2007 Colorado/ Canyon

2006 - 2007 Hummer H3

2006 - 2007 Pontiac Solstice

2007 - Saturn Sky

A customer can expect a blocked reverse shift 10 times in 50 attempts (20%). Engineering has determined that this condition is an inherit characteristic and should be considered normal. A higher (frequency above 20%) number of block outs may be considered abnormal and would be cause for a vehicle inspection. Much also depends on the customer and their shifting habits (normal or aggressive).

The correct procedure to follow when shifting for block out is to

1. shift into 1st gear
2. move vehicle forward slight
3. stop and shift into reverse.

Note: By shifting the transmission into reverse while the vehicle is moving will increase the tendency to block-out due to damage of the meshing teeth and would be considered abuse.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
