This bulletin replaces and supersedes the "TV Cable Adjustment" procedure on page 7Al-9 of the 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 Pontiac LeMans Service Manuals.
TV Cable Adjustment Figure 18
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS (Sec. 6E). Have an assistant depress the accelerator pedal to the wide-open throttle position (just as the bottom of the accelerator pedal contacts the kickdown switch). Verify that there is no compression of the over-travel spring (Figure 18). If the over-travel spring is compressed, then the throttle is past the wide-open throttle position and the throttle cable will not be adjusted properly.
3. Slide the throttle cable boot back to expose the C-clip retaining the throttle cable to the throttle cable bracket.
4. Hold the throttle cable lever in the wide-open position and remove the C-clip.
5. Holding the throttle cable lever, pull the throttle cable tight (to remove any slack) and install the C-clip securing the throttle cable. Install the C-clip in the adjusting groove on the throttle cable closest to the throttle cable bracket.
6. Release the throttle cable lever and verify that it returns to the idle stop position. If the lever does not return to the idle stop position, move the C-clip rearward to the next adjusting groove and re-verify the idle stop position.
7. Reposition the throttle cable boot.
8. Remove the C-clip retaining the TV cable adjusting pin.
9. Using a scribe or similar tool, pry up the TV cable adjusting pin, release the TV cable and allow it to move the rear adjusting point (Figure 18).
10. Depress the accelerator pedal to the floor; this adjusts the TV cable to the proper position. The adjusting pin will secure the TV cable automatically.
11. Install the C-clip securing the TV cable adjusting pin.
12. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS (Sec. 6E).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
