STEERING WHEEL RIM COVER FEELS SPONGY/LOOSE-REPLACE

Models Affected: 1989 LEMANS

Some of the subject vehicles may exhibit a condition of the steering wheel rim cover that customers may describe as "spongy" or "loose".

The steering wheel of these vehicles should be evaluated by gripping the rim cover by hand at various locations, not immediately adjacent to the steering wheel spokes. The rim cover should then be twisted about it's own axis - see Illustration. If excessive movement of the cover is observed, the steering wheel should be replaced, using P/N 90283249 steering wheel available from GMSPO, following Service Manual procedures. The original horn cap should be re-installed upon completion of steering wheel installation.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
