DTC Descriptor
DTC B0931: Compass Sensor Circuit
Circuit/System Description
The compass information is displayed in the driver information center (DIC). The electronic compass module interfaces with the DIC via the compass data signal circuit and the compass clock signal circuit. The two circuits function as a dedicated serial
data communication link between the electronic compass module and the DIC. The communication link is a two-wire bi-directional link between the DIC and the electronic compass module only. The DIC controls the compass clock signal circuit used for reading
and writing data. The compass data signal circuit is used to transmit data between the DIC and the electronic compass module. The electronic compass module internal fault detection is handled by the DIC and if the DIC does not receive a valid compass information
from the electronic compass module, the DIC blanks the compass display.
Conditions for Running the DTC
The DIC monitors the analog input value at power up.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The DIC does not detect the compass sensor.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The DTC will be set and stored in non-volatile memory.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• | The DTC becomes history when the DIC no longer detects a failure. |
• | The history DTC clears after 100 fault-free ignition cycles. |

Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the electronic compass module.
- Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 14 and ground.
⇒ | If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the electronic compass module. |
- Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates when connected between the ignition voltage circuit terminal 13 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition voltage circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the electronic compass module. |
- Ignition ON, Test for less than 1.0 V between the signal circuits listed below and ground:
• | Compass data signal terminal 11 |
• | Compass clock signal terminal 12 |
⇒ | If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuits for a short to voltage. If the circuit(s) test normal, replace the DIC. |
- Ignition OFF, Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuits listed below and ground:
• | Compass data signal terminal 11 |
• | Compass clock signal terminal 12 |
⇒ | If less than the specified value, test the signal circuits for a short to ground. If the circuit(s) test normal, replace the DIC. |
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the DIC.
- Ignition OFF, Test for less than 1 ohm between the signal circuit terminals listed below:
• | Compass data signal terminal 11 to terminal B |
• | Compass clock signal terminal 12 to terminal C |
⇒ | If greater than the specified value, test the signal circuits for an open/high resistance. |
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the electronic compass module.
