Models:2006-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix (SE, GT & GTP Models)
with Monsoon Audio (RPOs U87, U88)

Attention: THIS BULLETIN ONLY APPLIES TO VEHICLES WITH RPO U87 & U88. Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard this bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published Service Information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL - refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 04-00-89-053B for more details on the use of Engineering Information Bulletins.


Condition

Important: If the customer did not bring their vehicle in for this concern, DO NOT proceed with this bulletin.

Some customers may comment on an unusual noise coming from center channel speaker. The noise could be described as crackling, popping, distortion, buzzing or rattling.

Cause

Important: This bulletin ONLY applies to vehicles equipped with Monsoon audio systems (RPOs U87 or U88). For vehicles equipped with any other audio system, refer to SI. Do not proceed with this bulletin.

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of the above condition. GM Engineering has a need to obtain information first hand during diagnosis and BEFORE repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix.

Instructions

Important: Without attempting any repairs, contact GM Engineering Ted Mantyla at 586-492-4111 or Larry Blanton at 765-451-1092.

Contact GM Engineering with the following information:

  1. Can you duplicate the customer's concern?
  2. If Yes, what type of music, at what volume and at what equalizer settings (e.g. treble, balance, fade, base)?

  3. Is the amplifier outputting the correct signal to this center channel speaker (AC voltage signal only, no DC voltage at the speaker terminals)?
  4. Is the speaker hitting the grille mounting tabs?
  5. Is the speaker mounted all the way to the left in the IP opening?
  6. Is there a buzz-squeak-rattle (BSR) issue in the IP that the speaker is causing to light up when played loud?
  7. Is the equalization correct for this center channel speaker (speaker should have mid-range vocal frequencies and NO low bass frequencies)?

Contact GM Engineering before repairing the vehicle. GM Engineering may visit dealerships that are near Metro Detroit, Michigan or Metro Indianapolis, Indiana. In either case, you will receive a response back within one hour of your call. If you do not receive a call back from the engineer within one hour, proceed with diagnosis and repair according to the procedures SI.
