SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 8A - REVISED ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTICS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991 BUICK "W" MODEL

This bulletin supplement provides late production and revised information to Section 8A - Electrical Diagnostics, as follows:

The UPDATE CHANGE SUMMARY follows the service manual index. The summaries show wiring changes since publication of the final edition of the 1991 Service Manual. All changes are labeled with LATE PRODUCTION OR REVISED note.

The MULTI-USE INDEX allows the user to reference the Section 8A Supplement or 1991 Service Manual.

Please update your service manual accordingly.

Revised Notes

REVISED indicates that revisions occurred; however, the cars were built only in the way the Revised schematics or diagnostics represents. Revised schematics or diagnostics are noted in the Index with bold type, using the same page number used in the respective 1991 Service Manual. Note, a Revised schematic or diagnostic supersedes the respective page in the 1991 Service Manual.

The Multi-Use Index contains all information regarding the 1991 Service Manuals plus all the information included in the Section 8A Bulletin. This allows the user to enter the Section 8A Bulletin or an appropriate 1991 Service Manual by using just one index. Page number for the 19 9 1 Service Manuals are under the heading SERVICE MANUAL PAGE. Pages included in the Section 8A Bulletin are highlighted in boldface type and page numbers are under the heading PAGE/REVISION AND CATEGORY. Update Change Summary

The Update Change Summary describes the revisions, the category of revision, the Section and page number, and the zone where the revision can be located on the schematic or diagnostics. The schematic or diagnostics are separated into six zones so that information can be easily and consistently located within Section 8A. Figure 1 below shows the zone locations. If is recom- mended that you transfer the minor change information into the Update Change Summary to your 1991 Service Manuals.

BRAKE WARNING SYSTEM

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

o Try the following checks before doing the System Check.

1. Check INDIC Fuse by visual inspection.

2. Check that G103 is clean and tight.

3. Check Brake Fluid, if low, refer to Brakes (Section 5).

4. If brake fluid is low and the BRAKE Indicator does not light, check the Brake Fluid Level Switch.

5. If equipped with Antilock Brakes and BRAKE Indicator is lit, check for trouble codes. Refer to Section SE.

6. If the BRAKE Indicator does not light at all, check:

a. The BRAKE Indicator bulb for an open. b. The Instrument Cluster printed circuit for an open. c. The TAN/WHT (33) wire for an open.

o Refer to System Check for a guide to normal operation.

o Refer to System Diagnosis for diagnostic tests.

SYSTEM CHECK

o Use the System Check Table as a guide to normal operation.

o Refer to the diagnosis given if other results occur.

SYSTEM CHECK TABLE

o If result is correct, refer to Section 5 of the Chassis Service Manual to test the Brake Hydraulic System. Replace the Brake Fluid Level Switch if the Brake Hydraulic System is OK.

1. Check TAN/WHT (33) wire for a short to ground. If wire is OK, go to Table 2.

o If result is correct, check for a poor connection. If connection is OK, replace the Park Brake Switch.

1. Check the TAN/WHT (33) wire for a short to ground. If wire is OK, and ve- hicle is equipped with Daytime Running Lights, go to Table 3. If vehicle is equipped with Antilock Brakes, go to Table 4. If vehicle is not equipped with Daytime Running Lights or Antilock brakes, go to Table 5.

A: BRAKE INDICATOR REMAINS ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN RUN AND THE PARK BRAKE OFF (TABLE 3)

Disconnect: CONNECTOR At: DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL) MODULE CONNECTOR C2

Conditions:

o Ignition Switch: RUN o Park Brake: OFF

o If both results are correct, check for a poor connection. If connection is OK, replace the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Module.

1. Check the TAN/WHT (33) wire for a short to ground. If wire is OK, and ve- hicle is equipped with Antilock Brakes, go to Table 4. If vehicle is not equipped with Antilock Brakes, go to Table 5.

2. Check the LT BLU (1 134) wire for a short to ground between DRL connector C2 terminal E and the Park Brake Switch.

A: BRAKE INDICATOR REMAINS ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN RUN AND THE PARK BRAKE OFF (TABLE 4) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Disconnect: CONNECTOR At: LAMP DRIVER MODULE

Conditions:

o Ignition Switch: RUN o Park Brake: OFF

Disconnect Correct Result For Diagnosis ---------- -------------- ------------- Lamp BRAKE Driver Indicator does See 1 Module not light Connector

o If result is correct, check for a poor connection. If connection is OK, replace the Lamp Driver Module.

1. Check the TAN/WHT (33) wire for a short to ground. If wire is OK, go to Table 5.

A: BRAKE INDICATOR REMAINS ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN RUN AND THE PARK BRAKE OFF (TABLE 5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Measure: VOLTAGE At: IN-LINE CONNECTOR C202 IGNITION SWITCH HALF (Disconnected)

Condition:

o Ignition Switch: OFF o Park Brake: OFF

Measure Correct For Between Voltage Diagnosis ------- ------- --------- C202/B3 & 0 volts See 1 Battery

o If the voltage is correct, disconnect the Instrument Cluster, check the printed circuit and TAN/WHT (33) wire for a short to ground. If OK, service the Instrument Cluster.

1. Check for a short to ground in the Steering Column. If OK, replace the Ignition Switch.

B: BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHTS WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN BULB TEST, BUT DOES NOT LIGHT WITH THE PARK BRAKE APPLIED (TABLE 1) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Connect: FUSED JUMPER At: PARK BRAKE SWITCH CONNECTOR (Disconnected)

Condition:

o Ignition Switch: RUN

Connect Correct For Between Result Diagnosis ------- ------- ---------- Park Brake BRAKE Switch Indicator See 1 Connector & lights Ground

o If BRAKE Indicator lights, check for a poor connection. If connection is OK, replace the Park Brake Switch.

1. If the vehicle does not have Daytime Running Lights, check/repair TAN/WHT (33) wire for an open (see schematic). If the vehicle has Daytime Running Lights, go to Table 2.

B: BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHTS WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN BULB TEST, BUT DOES NOT LIGHT WHEN THE PARK BRAKE IS APPLIED (TABLE 2) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Connect: FUSED JUMPER At: DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL) MODULE CONNECTOR C2 (Disconnected)

Conditions:

o Ignition Switch: RUN o Park Brake: APPLIED

o If BRAKE Indicator lights as shown, check for a poor connection. If connec- tion is OK, replace Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Module.

1. Check/repair TAN/WHT (33) wire for an open (see schematic).

2. Check/repair LT BLU (1134) wire between Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Module and the Park Brake Switch for an open

C: BRAKE INDICATOR DOES NOT LIGHT WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH IN BULB TEST ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Connect: FUSED JUMPER At: IGNITION SWITCH IN-LINE CONNECTOR C202 (Connected)

Condition:

o Ignition Switch: RUN

Connect Correct For Between Result Diagnosis ------- ------- --------- B3 BRAKE (TAN/WHT) Indicator See 1 & Ground lights

o If BRAKE Indicator lights, check/repair the connector terminal. Replace the Ignition Switch if the connector terminal is OK.

1. Check/repair TAN/WHT (33) wire for an open (see schematic).

CIRCUIT OPERATION

Battery voltage is applied to the BRAKE Indicator when the Ignition Switch is in RUN, BULB TEST or START. Four switches are connected to the BRAKE Indicator. When any of these switches close, ground is provided and the indicator lights.

The Ignition Switch provides a ground when it is in the BULB TEST and START positions.

The Park Brake Switch provides a ground when the Park Brake is applied.

The Brake Fluid Level Switch closes to light the BRAKE Indicator when there is low brake fluid in one of the two hydraulic brake systems. This could be caused by a leak in one of the brake lines. The switch can be reset to an open position by refilling the reservoir; however, this can only be accomplished after the faulty system is repaired. If equipped with Antilock Brakes, the Lamp Driver Module closes to light the BRAKE Indicator when an Antilock Brake failure will affect base brake operation.

REAR DEFOGGER

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

o Try the following checks before doing the System Check.

1. Check CLUST Fuse and INDIC Fuse by visual inspection. Check the REAR DEFOG Circuit Breaker.

2. If one or more of the grid lines do not heat, refer to Section 10-2 for repair procedures.

3. If the Rear Defogger grid becomes warm, but the ON Indicator does not light, check bulb and PPL/WHT wire from S226 to the Heater And A/C Control Assembly for an open (see schematic).

4. If Panel Lights do not operate with Light Switch in HEAD or PARK, check wiring to bulb.

5. If the Rear Defogger is ON at all times, check the PPL/WHT (293) wire for a short to battery.

CIRCUIT OPERATION

With the Ignition Switch in RUN, voltage is applied to the Heater And A/C Control Assembly. When the Rear Defogger Control Switch is pressed ON, voltage is applied to the Rear Defogger Timer- Relay. The contact closes and provides voltage to the ON Indicator and the Rear Defogger. The rear window will become warm to remove the fog from the surface of the window.

The contact in the Rear Defogger Timer-Relay will stay closed until the Rear Defogger Control Switch is pressed again or the timer cycle is complete.

The first time the Rear Defogger Control Switch is pushed, the Defogger Timer-Relay will allow the Defogger to operate for approximately 10 minutes. Each time after the Rear Defogger Control Switch is pushed, the Defogger Timer-Relay will reset to operate for approximately 5 minutes. The Rear Defogger Timer-Relay will reset to 10 minutes when the Ignition Switch is turned OFF and then back to RUN.

CIRCUIT OPERATION

The Blower Motor is a variable speed motor. The higher the voltage applied to the motor, the faster the speed.

With the Heater And A/C Control Assembly in OFF, voltage is applied to the Low Blower Relay coil through the YEL (770) wire. The relay operates, its contacts open, and voltage to the Blower Switch is removed.

When any other mode except OFF is selected, the Low Blower Relay is de-energized and voltage is applied to the Blower Switch and Blower Resistors.

With the Blower Switch in LO, voltage is applied through all three Blower Resistors to the relay contacts in the High Blower Relay and the Blower Motor. The Blower Motor runs at low speed.

As the Blower Switch is moved through positions M1 and M2, the switch bypasses some of the Blower Resistors, allowing more voltage to be applied to the Blower Motors, which will increase its speed.

When the Blower Motor Switch is in HI, voltage is applied through the ORN (52) wire to the coil of the high Blower Relay. The High Blower Relay operates, removing the Blower Resistors from the circuit. Battery voltage is then applied directly to the Blower Motor through the Blower Relay contacts. The motor runs at maximum speed.

o If the voltages are correct but one or more air valves don't operate, check that valves are free to move. Check that the actuator receives vacuum in the proper modes. If no vacuum is present, check for a poor connection. If OK, replace the Solenoid Box.

2. Check BLK (150) wire for an open. Check that ground G103 is clean and tight.

CIRCUIT OPERATION

HEATER AND A/C CONTROL ASSEMBLY

With the Ignition Switch in RUN, voltage is applied through the CLUST Fuse and PNK/BLK (750) wire to the Heater and A/C Control Assembly. The voltage from the LT BLU (733) wire is varied from Battery to approximately 1.5 volts by the Temperature Control Potentiometer. The Control Assembly provides ground paths for the Solenoid Box through the BLK (150) wire and the control switches.

SOLENOID BOX

The Solenoid Box contains the solenoid valves that control the Vacuum Actuators. There is one solenoid for each Vacuum Actuators When the solenoids are de-energized, the valves vent the Vacuum Actuators, allowing the Vacuum Actuator to return to the vent position determined by a spring. Voltage is supplied to the solenoids through the BRN (50) wire and the AC 2 Fuse, which is powered in RUN.

RECIRCULATION VALVE

The recirculation valve closes the outside air inlet so that air from the inside of the vehicle is recirculated through the A/C system for maximum cooling. The outside air inlet is closed when vacuum is applied to the actuator. When the Recirculation Valve Vacuum Actuator is vented, the spring returns the recirculation valve to position A, which allows outside air to be drawn into the vehicle.

AIR TEMPERATURE VALVE

The Air Temperature Valve determines how much air flows through the Heater core, which determines the temperature of the air to the outlets. It is moved by the Air Temperature Valve Motor. The position of the valve is determined by the voltage level of the temperature control output from the Heater And A/C Control Assembly. The Air Temperature Valve is powered with the Ignition Switch in RUN. Voltage is applied through the CLUST Fuse and the PNK/ BLK (750) wire.

With the CJ3 system there are two Temperature controls and Valve Motors. This allows individual adjustment of air being supplied to the driver and passenger. Each control operates in a manner similar to the one described.

A/C VALVE

The A/C Valve determines whether air flow will be directed to the A/C Outlets or the Heater/ Defrost Outlets. With no vacuum applied to the actuator, the valve is in position A, which directs air to the Heater/Defrost Outlet.

BI-LEVEL VALVE

The Bi-Level Valve is a small valve which allows partial air flow to the A/C Outlets when the A/C Valve is in position A. The Bi-Level Valve is opened when vacuum is applied to the Bi-Level Valve Vacuum Actuator.

HEATER/DEFROST VALVE

The Heater/Defrost Valve can assume three positions and is operated by a Bi-Directional Vacuum Actuator which can move the valve to either of two positions. If no vacuum is applied to either Vacuum Actuator, the valve is in mid position. Air flow with the valve in the mid position (B) will be delivered to both the Defrost Outlets at the windshield and the Heater Outlets at floor level. When the Heater Vacuum Actuator is operated, the valve moves to position (C), forcing all air flow to the Heater Outlets. When the Defrost Vacuum Actuator is operated, the valve is moved to position (A) which will force airflow to the Defrost Outlets.

o Try the following checks before doing the System Diagnosis.

1. Check STOP Fuse, INDIC Fuse and TAIL Fuse by visual inspection.

2. Check TURN Fuse and Turn Flasher by operating the Turn Lights.

3. Check that grounds G103 and G303 are clean and tight.

4. If the Fasten Belts Chime Reminder and FASTEN BELTS Indicator operate continuously, replace the Chime Module.

CIRCUIT OPERATION

The Warnings and Alarms System sounds a chime to bring attention to one or more of several conditions. These conditions are: 1) the Light Switch is in HEAD or PARK and the Ignition Switch is not in RUN, BULB TEST or START; 2) the key is in the Ignition Switch and the LH Front Door is open; 3) the Driver's Seat Belt is unbuckled when the Ignition Switch is turned to RUN, BULB TEST or START; and 4) the vehicle has driven more than a half mile with a turn signal on.

IGNITION KEY CHIME

Voltage is applied at all times to terminal 32 of the Chime Module through the STOP Fuse. When the key is in the ignition and LH Front Door is open, terminal 33 of the Chime Module is grounded. This sounds the chime.

LIGHTS ON CHIME

When the Light Switch is in HEAD or PARK, voltage is applied through the TAIL Fuse and Light Switch to terminal 31 of the Chime Module. When the Ignition Switch is in RUN, BULB TEST, or START, voltage is applied through the INDIC Fuse to terminal 38 of the Chime Module. If these two voltages are sensed, the chime will not be sounded.

When the Ignition Switch is turned LO LOCK, OFF, or ACCY; the INDIC Fuse loses voltage. The Chime Module senses the change. If voltage is available from the Light Switch, voltage from the STOP Fuse is applied to sound the chime. The chime can be turned off by turning the Light Switch to OFF.

TURN SIGNAL CHIME

Voltage is applied at all times to terminal 32 of the Chime Module from the STOP Fuse. The TURN Fuse supplies voltage to the Turn Flasher.

When a turn signal is operated, voltage is alternately applied and removed to terminal 29 of the chime Module. The Module begins to monitor vehicle distance at terminal 30. If the Turn Signal is still flashing after the vehicle has traveled 0. 8 kilometers (0.5 miles), the Turn Signal Warning chime will sound.

FASTEN BELTS INDICATOR

The Fasten Belts Indicator is also controlled by the Chime Module. The indicator will light anytime the Ignition Switch is in RUN, BULB TEST or START and the Seat Belt is unbuckled. It will go out as soon as the Seat Belt is buckled.

SEAT BELT CHIME

With the Ignition Switch in RUN, BULB TEST or START, voltage is applied through the INDIC Fuse to terminal 38 of the Chime Module. With the LH Front Seat Belt unbuckled, terminal 35 of the Chime Module is grounded through the Safety Belt Switch. The Seat Belt chime sounds for 4 to 8 seconds. The FASTEN BELTS Indicator will go

o If the Backup Lights go off, check the connection and adjustment of the Transaxle Position Switch. If adjustment does not correct the result, replace the Transaxle Position Switch. Refer to Section 7A for adjustment and replacement procedures.

o If the Backup Lights remain on, repair the LT GRN (24) wire for a short to battery.

CIRCUIT OPERATION

Voltage is applied at all times through the TRUNK REL Fuse to the Transaxle Position Switch. Whenever the gear selector lever is shifted to REVERSE, the Switch closes and Voltage is applied to the Backup Lights.
