HIGH EFFORT TO SOUND HORN OR HORN MAY SOUND DURING

SUBJECT: HIGH EFFORT TO SOUND HORN OR HORN MAY SOUND DURING ADJUSTMENT OF TILT STEERING WHEEL (INSTALL SHIM/REPLACE STEERING WHEEL)

MODELS: 1994 PONTIAC GRAND AM

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON INCREASED EFFORT TO SOUND HORN, OR HORN MAY SOUND DURING ADJUSTMENT OF TILT STEERING WHEEL.

CAUSE:

DIMENSIONAL VARIANCE OF STEERING WHEEL AND DRIVER AIRBAG MODULE AFFECTS THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT REQUIRED TO SOUND HORN.

CORRECTION:

USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:

1. DISABLE SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR) SYSTEM, PULL FUSE #3, AND DISCONNECT SIR ELECTRICAL CONNECTION THROUGH LOWER SOUND INSULATOR ACCESS PANEL.

2. DETERMINE IF CONDITION (HIGH EFFORT OR SENSITIVE HORN) EXISTS ON BOTH SIDES, LEFT SIDE ONLY, OR RIGHT SIDE ONLY.

3. REMOVE AIRBAG MODULE (3 SCREWS).

4. VERIFY HORN SWITCHES OPERATE SMOOTHLY AND WITHOUT STICKING BY PUSHING WITH ONE FINGER.

5. GENTLY PULL HORN SWITCH HOUSING(S) APART FROM STEERING WHEEL FOAM, BASED ON EFFORT RESULTS FOUND FROM STEP 1 ABOVE. SEE ATTACHED ILLUSTRATION.

6. IF HIGH HORN EFFORT CONDITION EXISTS, INSTALL A 1MM SOFT SHIM, P/N 16757047, TO LEGS OF HORN SWITCH(ES).

7. IF SENSITIVE HORN CONDITION EXISTS, CHECK FOR EXISTING SHIMS AND REMOVE. IF NO SHIMS EXIST, PROCEED TO STEP 9.

8. INSTALL HORN SWITCH(ES) INTO POCKETS IN STEERING WHEEL FOAM.

9. INSTALL AIRBAG MODULE.

10. INSTALL SIR FUSE AND CONNECT SIR CONNECTION THROUGH ACCESS PANEL.

11. IF CONDITION DOES NOT IMPROVE, REPLACE EXISTING STEERING WHEEL AND INFLATOR MODULE -

STEERING WHEEL (RPO N46) P/N 16757097 STEERING WHEEL (RPO NP5) P/N 16757098 MODULE ASSEMBLY - SIR P/N 16759078

PARTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AVAILABLE ON SEPTEMBER 18, 1995.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: C8835 (TO INSTALL SHIM) LABOR TIME: 0.4

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: E7020 (TO REPLACE STEERING WHEEL) USE PUBLISHED LABOR OPERATION TIME.
