CONDITION: Some owners of 1992 Grand Am models may comment on a condition where the lower instrument panel compartment door may work partially open over rough road conditions or inclines, allowing the instrument panel compartment lamp to illuminate, potentially discharging the battery.
CAUSE: Instrument Panel (I/P) compartment door lacks a positive stop.
CORRECTION: A retainer, P/N 22584137, is available to give the compartment door a positive stop.
Remove lower I/P compartment as outlined in the 1992 Grand Am Service Manual.
1. Using retainer as a template, mark two holes as shown in Figure 1.
2. Drill two 3.175mm (1/8") holes and remove burrs from inside the I/P compartment.
3. Position retainer inside I/P compartment with legs outside I/P compartment.
4. Rivet retainer in place using 2 rivets, P/N 9424862, as shown in Figure 2.
5. Reinstall lower I/P compartment.
