DECK LID HINGE RATTLE - APPLY ADHESIVE CLOSED CELL FOAM TAPE

Subject: DECK LID HINGE RATTLE (APPLY ADHESIVE CLOSED CELL FOAM TAPE TO DECK LID HINGE ASSEMBLY)

Models Affected: 1992 GRAND AM COUPES AND SEDANS

Condition: A rattle or ringing from the rear compartment area, specifically the deck lid hinge assembly(s), while traveling over bumps.

Cause: Metal-to-metal contact between the deck lid hinge spring link arbor bushing and the hinge box. This link will feel loose with the deck lid shut, allowing lateral movement while traveling over rough roads.

Correction: To ease access to the hinge, remove the deck lid hinge cover, if equipped. Install an approximate 1.0" x 1.0" patch of single side adhesive closed cell foam tape with a minimum thickness of 1/8", to the two locations of the rattling deck lid hinge assembly as shown in Figure 1. Apply tape directly to both sides of the link between the link and the hinge box. Position patch as close to the spring arbor as possible to maximize the amount of insulated area between the link and the hinge box. Reinstall hinge cover.

Part Information: Scotchfoam - black 1/8" thick single coated vinyl foam tape. Part Number 06375.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
