ADHESIVE RESIDUE ON REAR COMPARTMENT LIFT GLASS

SUBJECT: ADHESIVE RESIDUE ON REAR COMPARTMENT LIFT GLASS AND LACE MOLDING (APPLY CLEANING SOLVENT/REMOVE EXCESS ADHESIVE/ PRESSURE WASH)

MODELS: 1994-96 CHEVROLET CAMARO 1994-96 PONTIAC FIREBIRD (COUPES ONLY)

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT ADHESIVE IS OOZING OUT FROM BETWEEN THE REAR COMPARTMENT LIFT GLASS LACE MOLDING AND THE GLASS SURFACE.

CAUSE:

CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO THE HOT MELT MOLDING ADHESIVE MIXING WITH MOLDING SOLVENTS AND BECOMING "RUNNY" IN HOT AMBIENT TEMPERATURES.

CORRECTION:

LACE MOLDINGS SHOULD NOT BE REPLACED ON VEHICLES EXHIBITING THIS CONDITION. APPLY CLEANING SOLVENT, REMOVE EXCESS ADHESIVE AND PRESSURE WASH ADHESIVE RESIDUE FROM THE GLASS/MOLDING AREA. THE SOLVENT APPLICATION AND CLEANING PORTION SHOULD BE DONE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE ON A WARM LACE MOLDING. IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO WARM THE LACE MOLDING WITH A HEAT LAMP OR HEAT GUN PRIOR TO SOLVENT APPLICATION.

ALL VEHICLES BUILT IN MODEL YEAR 1994, AS WELL AS 1995 MODELS BUILT PRIOR TO THE BELOW LISTED VIN BREAKPOINTS, FEATURE A PARTIAL LACE MOLDING THAT ONLY ATTACHES TO THE LOWER PORTION OF THE REAR COMPARTMENT LIFT GLASS. VEHICLES BUILT IN 1995 WITH THE BELOW LISTED VIN BREAKPOINTS OR AFTER, AS WELL AS 1996 MODELS, FEATURE A FULL LACE MOLDING THAT ATTACHES AROUND THE COMPLETE LIFT GLASS (SEE FIGURE 1).

IMPORTANT: IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO OBTAIN A SQUEEZE OR SPRAY BOTTLE TO APPLY THE SOLVENT.

2. ALLOW SOLVENT TO REMAIN IN CAVITY AREA FOR AT LEAST TWO MINUTES.

3. USING A FLAT-BLADED TOOL (SCREWDRIVER, POCKET SCALE, ETC.) AS A SCRAPER, INSERT BETWEEN LACE MOLDING AND GLASS SURFACE AND REMOVE EXCESS ADHESIVE FROM THE AREA.

NOTICE: DO NOT USE A UTILITY KNIFE, RAZOR BLADE OR OTHER SHARP OBJECT FOR ADHESIVE REMOVAL OR DAMAGE TO THE LACE MOLDING MAY RESULT.

5. USING COMPRESSED AIR AND A SHOP TOWEL, REMOVE AS MUCH EXCESS ADHESIVE REMOVER OR CLEANER RESIDUE FROM UNDER THE LACE MOLDING AS POSSIBLE.

6. PRESSURE WASH THE AREA TO ENSURE ALL ADHESIVE RESIDUE AND SOLVENT HAS BEEN REMOVED.

7. ON VEHICLES WITH THE PARTIAL LACE MOLDING, SECURE BOTH ENDS OF THE LACE MOLDING TO THE GLASS BY APPLYING A BEAD OF GM WEATHERSTRIP ADHESIVE, P/N 12345097, APPROXIMATELY 25-50 MM (1-2 INCHES) LONG BETWEEN THE LACE MOLDING AND GLASS EDGE AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1.
