This bulletin cancels and replaces 89-10-8 published 2189. This bulletin has been revised to change the source name and telephone number for the recommended material.
1989 Pontiac Firebird models (beginning with VIN KL211199) that include D-81 option "Aero-Wing" spoiler have a new paint process used on that specific spoiler. The process used is a two part prime, base and clear coat system.
The new spoiler, GM P/N 12397143 is available through GMSPO and will come pre-primed.
Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
The material recommended is from AKZO Coatings Inc. AT-331 Base Coat/AT361 Clear Coat.

REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR AT-331/AT-361 FLEXIBLE BASECOAT/CLEARCOAT
Sand primer surface using 400 grit or finer sandpaper. Remove sanding dust by wiping with solvent (toluene or equivalent).
----------- Agitate AT-331 basecoat for 1-2 minutes on paint shaker.
Activate basecoat with urethane hardener as follows:
Metallic Colors: Mix 10 parts basecoat with 1 part 10AHU-41421 urethane hardener; stir thoroughly. Reduce to spray viscosity with 2-3 parts 10 AHK-43286 solvent blend if ambient temperature is 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit or, 2-3 parts 10 AHK-42550 solvent blend if ambient temperature is 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Solid Colors: Mix 4 parts basecoat with 1 part 10AHU-41421 urethane hardener; stir thoroughly. Reduce to spray viscosity with 1-2 parts 10AHK-43286 solvent blend if ambient temperature is 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit or, 1-2 parts 10AHK-42550 solvent blend if ambient temperature is 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Basecoat pot-life is 4 hours.
Apply basecoat using 60-70 psi atomizing air in two coats allowing 1-3 minutes flash-off between coats. Allow basecoat to flash for 3-5 minutes before applying clearcoat.
------------ Stir AT-361 clearcoat for 1-2 minutes.
Activate clearcoat with urethane hardener as follows:
Mix 5 parts clearcoat with 1 part 1OBHU-41421 urethane hardener; stir thoroughly. Reduce to spray viscosity with 1-2 parts 10AHK-43286 solvent blend if ambient temperature is 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit or, 1-2 parts 10AHK-42550 solvent blend if ambient temperature is 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Clearcoat pot-life is 4 hours.
Apply clearcoat using 60-70 psi atomizing air in 2-3 coats allowing 1-3 minutes flash-off between coats. Allow 10-15 minutes flash before force drying.
Force Dry: 60 minutes @ 140 degrees Fahrenheit
Cleanup: Clean spray guns and equipment immediately with solvent (xylene, toluene or equivalent).
Use applicable labor operation and time.
