Poor engine performance of 3.8L Turbos in 1989 20th Anniversary Trans Am models may be attributable to a water saturated air cleaner filter element.
In certain situations, water may follow the left fender flange to a hole (location A, Figure 1), drip onto snorkel-to-housing seam (location B, Figure 1) and seep into the air cleaner housing.
To correct the condition use the following procedures:
1. Seal the snorkel-to-housing assembly seam (location B, Figure 1) with RTV sealer or equivalent.
2. Drill 1/16" drain holes in the bottom of the lower air cleaner housing at locations indicated in Figure 1.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
