Some 1989 model Firebird models may be equipped with T-Top panels made of Acrylic plastic instead of glass, and also include a new latch system which aids in centering the panel in the roof opening. Pontiac vehicles with VINs after KL 243345 will have the new panels.
The Acrylic panels have a special hard coating to resist scratching and require special care when removed for stowage or cleaning. A decal is located on the inside rear surface of the panel, specifying that special care is required.
- Flush off dust and dirt with water and then dry.
- Clean panel with GM #1050427, or equivalent. Allow cleaner to remain on panel for about 1 minute, then wipe dry with a soft lint free cloth.
- DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS!
Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
The new latching system includes spring loaded sleeves on the ends of the rods, and when latched into position, provide a more consistent location of the panel in the opening while also reducing squeaks and rattles.
The new Acrylic panels are used with a revised center finishing molding (T bar). The new T bar is required due to a thickness change from the previous glass panel.
In addition, past model glass roof panels will be available, and will include the new latching system.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
